Saw some asshole griping about people promoting for sale things they make here on Mastodon.

So I blocked his stupid ass instead.

Look. Some folks lost their ENTIRE LIVELIHOOD when Twitter went tits up.

Save the arguments about building on other people's platforms for another time. Because for many, this is immediate, desperate, and is the difference between eating this week or not.

Don't be a dick.

@JenWojcik A lot of us musicians used Twitter and Instagram to promote our gigs. That helped us tremendously. And helped us make income to keep a roof over our heads etc.

There's nothing wrong with promoting our businesses and/or side hustle here on Mastodon.

@IveyJanette @JenWojcik the overwhelming cultural vibe on Mastodon is "this is a great network because absolutely nobody can ever read a damn thing anyone says"
@IveyJanette @JenWojcik imagine trying to keep yourself fed, housed, and in arm’s reach of joy by promoting something you do. Totally illegal. ❤️
@TransitBiker @IveyJanette @JenWojcik I tried that and got banned on fosstodon.org. Some instances are very uptight about people living! lol

@bishop @TransitBiker @IveyJanette @JenWojcik That's crazy.

Free and open-source software (FOSS) was never without a business model. Except hobby projects by students. And these are very rare.

Billions of dollars are made with FOSS.

FOSStodon banning someone for self-promotion is just stupid.

@IveyJanette Heck, there is no problem promoting your own sh*t ANYWHERE on ANY social media or network.

That's the whole point of these stupid things —to spread news to your social connections. And if you can't do that here, then where are you supposed to do it??

And if you find someone (who you think is) overdoing it, block them and move on.

@JenWojcik

@shrikant @IveyJanette @JenWojcik THIS!

I was self-conscious when I first promoted something on Twitter and even marked it as an ad.

But then I realized that it isn't legally required to mark ads if it is for your own stuff that you made yourself.

And some countries are very strict nowadays with advertising social media.

@Stefan_S_from_H @shrikant @JenWojcik Yes. That's why many of us moved to Instagram to promote our gigs and careers.
@IveyJanette @JenWojcik If you are not violating TOS, you should post whatever you want to post. If folks don't like it, they can mute, block or get on with their day.
@venitamathias @JenWojcik Yep. There's other servers and instances they can go to.
