He's going to get people killed with this.

You know what Nazis used to do in my Twitter replies before I started mass blocking?

They'd give my home address out to OTHER Nazis in my replies who had expressed an interest in murdering my family and me.

@gwensnyder I don't know why people haven't just left twitter yet. Still???? It's basically kiwifarms now

@smollestbunny @gwensnyder

Upping the toxicity by 5% every week gets rid of a few but those with business there appear to just be doubling down, refusing to admit they're swimming in napalm and DDT. But I don't know why people haven't realized how toxic all social media is and left it.

@aka_quant_noir @gwensnyder I agree all social media sucks but some of us do still rely on it to survive. Without people donating to my ko-fi I'd be screwed

@aka_quant_noir @gwensnyder also I'm not on twitter anymore more. I don't ask for funds on fb because it's so hostile towards poor people but still better than twitter because it's not yet kiwifarms levels of fucked.
I have Instagram which I barely use atm, and just recently got blue sky, and of course I have mastodon. I think that's enough social medias for me.

I also run a page on fb to try help people unlearn right wing propaganda

*especially* the last part
@smollestbunny @gwensnyder for me it is Baseball. Unless I want to move to Instagram and give ally data to Facebook
@PaulFranz @gwensnyder surely you can keep up with that elsewhere
@smollestbunny @gwensnyder keep up with the news of baseball,yes. But what about the players? Where do they have there social media presence? I know some of them are on Instagram. But I guess I will need to start researching each player.
@PaulFranz @smollestbunny @gwensnyder it is only a relatively recent advent to start keeping up with individual players. always seemed odd to me.

@smollestbunny @gwensnyder a few weeks ago Mark Hamill suggested a single day boycott of Twitter.
I thought hey, yeah, I can do that. And removed Twitter from my phone's home screen. But then I just never went back at all.
I opened it up to read a few threads linked from elsewhere, but haven't posted anything and broke the daily Twitter scrolling/posting habit.

Was really surprised how easy it was.

@smollestbunny @gwensnyder

I didn't leave completely, so I could log in to block every ad post I saw.

@smollestbunny @gwensnyder

Most of the alternatives are either nearly as bad (Zuckerberg) or exist for a specific niche (Mastodon is for people who specifically hate Elon Musk). If you want to reach a mass audience, you go where the people are, which makes social media tend towards a monopoly.

@smollestbunny @gwensnyder i left today because of that. i had enough of waiting every week for what stupid shit elons gonna make next
@smollestbunny @gwensnyder why i'm still there (but planning to delete hopefully soon): science/engineering accounts that post stuff relevant to covid (e.g. professors of atmospheric chemistry; people who study the evolution of viruses; HVAC engineers who post about new airflow/filtration standards relevant to covid)...
@smollestbunny @gwensnyder it's hard because most of them haven't posted any info about other social platforms yet
@JamesWidman @gwensnyder lots of these people are here, I follow lots of them

@smollestbunny @gwensnyder It's legitimately worse.

KF was barely/non-modified Xenforo forum software, afaik. Even that has a blocking feature.

@smollestbunny @gwensnyder I haven't left there yet bc I have over 20k followers but if he removes the block, that's it for me.
@gwensnyder anyway. I didn't expect this to blow up. Consider donating to my ko-fi cause I'm poor and disabled. I'm turning off notifications for this
@smollestbunny @gwensnyder I'm exclusively using it to follow Derek Guy's takes on menswear.
@gwensnyder I have no idea why, but disabling blocking has gained traction for some godforsaken reason.
@ananas because the only people who give Musk money are blocked by all the people they want to yell at on Twitter
@gwensnyder Fair enough. I'm waiting for the day when the twitter algorithm looks at all my blocks as "interactions" and recommends me more of the shit I don't want to see with me being unable to block it.
@gwensnyder @ananas Ding ding ding, we have a winner.
@gwensnyder @ananas oh true. I've been seeing bots that automatically block anyone with a check mark. This prob is why he is doing this

@1900490Freak @gwensnyder @ananas

I also block all promoted posts. All of them. Blocking them is killing his already anemic ad revenue.

@gwensnyder @ananas I want to build a disable Muskrat feature and sell it as an add-on

@ananas @gwensnyder To the (supposed) free speech absolutists and also the pro-harassment crowd that Twitter's always courted, the ability to block people falls under Evil Scary Cancelling. They've always opposed anything that makes it easier for people to not pay attention to them.

They'll cheer this as opening up the marketplace of ideas or whatnot even as they also cheer on Musk banning the use of words like "cisgender," because both policies let them hurt people they dislike.

@pstewart @ananas @gwensnyder Which will only lead to the exodus of the last decent people on Twitter, and then the trolls will get bored because they've nobody to hassle. Twitter will become another RW echo chamber like Truth Social.
@brianeisley @pstewart @ananas @gwensnyder Exactly. Plus, a lot of ppl will leave who block Musk now lol
@dalfen @brianeisley @pstewart @ananas @gwensnyder True. I thought he was kind of cool a few years ago so followed him on twitter - then discovered the reality - and blocked him. In lead up to twitter purchase to unblocked to review opinion (worse if anything). I still don’t understand how he’s such a tool but kind of civilised elsewhere.
@pstewart @ananas @gwensnyder It has become a shining beacon of all the things that are wrong with ’naíve liberalism’, the political corpus that all freedom from any individual control is always wrong.
@ananas @gwensnyder apple will not host him, they require blocking

@ananas @gwensnyder That’s because Elmo does not actually lead, he follows.

He’s a communal narcissist. His (uncurable) psychosis is that only he can save the world, and he can do better than anyone else.

With a social media as his ”flock” to save, he becomes effectively a populist. And to boot he’s probably only surrounded by yes-men telling all his ideas are wonderlful by now anyway.

Classic mad emperor, with the god-complex settling in.

@gwensnyder
Maybe when a bunch of people start seeing his tweets again and can't turn them off they will leave?
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@gwensnyder Elon probably found out that he is the most blocked user on Xitter😆
@gwensnyder this is my sign that maybe I should actually delete my account instead of just abandoning it...
@verolynne @gwensnyder no, I suggest you keep the space so someone else on the other side can't recover your handle and pretend to be you. Just don't feed the trolls, starve them.
@Etche_homo @gwensnyder good point! I'm probably too small to worry about someone snagging my username, but I'd rather not give anyone the chance.
@gwensnyder that is insanely dangerous, and sadly I’m not surprised Musk is doing this
@gwensnyder This will further alienate advertisers, as companies don't want to be liable for exposing their employees to abuse. Long term, I'm not sure Musk cares about advertising, as he wants to build a subscription- and transaction-based business model. But X is nowhere near that point yet.
@gwensnyder yep. They never got my address correct, but they sure did spend time sending me threats. En masse.
@ATLeagle @gwensnyder
Sending a bunch of rabid nazis to the wrong address isn't really better than sending them to the right address unless no one lives at the wrong address.
@Tsutsuku @gwensnyder and I'm sure they took me seriously when I said that's not me...

@gwensnyder disgusting.

There is so much shit there I don't want to see, and if I can't block it, I'm out.

I stuck around because some people there didn't move off for various reasons, but yeah this'll probably kick them off as well.

@transitory @gwensnyder same. At least I was able to block the nazis and transphobes into the sun. But now comes my last straw. It’s hard, because I’ve had that account for over a decade and built connections that changed my life for the better. For now, the account’s on private as I make final arrangements both online and within.

@gwensnyder this seriously makes it a worse platform for marginalized people and will kick them off, which the worst people using it (ex: elon himself) will celebrate

That leads to it becoming 4chan/gab, which despite still existing do have limited mainstream appeal

@gwensnyder I closed my account for other reasons, but if I saw this, I'd fly straight to the close account button and press that thing down hard.
@trabex @gwensnyder Next step is removing the “close account” button. After that, reviving closed accounts. He is free to do anything. Even make fake posts in other’s names.
@ahltorp @gwensnyder Faking posts from previously closed accounts sound likes big legal liability. But I wouldn't put it past him. In business terms, this would be called "painting the fence," which means inflating numbers from within the company to make it appear the public is more interested than they are.
