Unless you move your pieces around with your genitals, there is no goddamm good reason for CHESS COMPETITIONS to ban transgender players.
I MEAN COME THE FUCK ON.

For the folks amazed that chess competition would be segregated:
• Most women couldn't attend colleges or universities until well into the 20th century.
• Numerous Nobel Prizes have been awarded to men who stole research from women.
• Larger academic pursuits, major research positions, grants, etc. are still largely closed to women.
Academic gatekeeping is a tool of the patriarchy to keep us stupid, barefoot, and pregnant in the kitchen. This is part of that.
NOTE: NOT ALL OF THEM ARE. I KNOW
The women's chess titles were apparently created comparatively recently, in order to encourage more women to play chess.
The top female chess player of all time, Judit Polgár, would be the 52nd strongest active player today, I just found out.
There isn't a "men's" division, it seems to be called "open" and women can and do participate.
This is what I learned in 10 minutes with Google, very interesting - no editorializing meant here, I simply had no idea.
(Other than transphobia) they didn't give one.

And to add to the problem:
"Under the new guidelines, any transgender men who earned their titles in pre-transition period in a women’s tournament will be stripped of those achievements and the “abolished women title may be transferred into a general title of the same or lower level... But trans women who won titles in men’s events will be allowed to keep that title in full.”
@woodsbythesea @matejpp @JenWojcik The article is not accurate. There are no "men's" events or titles. There are general titles and events, and a separate system of "women's" titles. The new FIDE rule is that trans women keep the general titles they hold, but trans men don't keep their women-specific titles. That doesn't sound unreasonable to me.
(The unreasonable thing is that FIDE is barring trans women from women's events until they decide otherwise on a case-by-case basis. WTH is that?)
Ask a simple question....
Insanely good article making me late for work.
Unlike, for example, concert piano:

(It blows my mind that this is a thing that even exists.... 🤦 😂 )
@vmstan @drahardja I'm sorry...are y'all really this clueless?
EVERYTHING IS GENDERED SO AS TO EXCLUDE WOMEN FROM THEM.
IT HAS BEEN THIS WAY SINCE THE DAWN OF TIME.
@JenWojcik @vmstan @drahardja This has been an interesting thread!
Apparently women can and do compete in the "open" category, and there is a separate "women's" category as well.
Vera Menchik was the first woman to appear in international open competitions in the 1920s and 30s, until she was killed by the Fascists at the age of 38.
@JenWojcik Why are there even sex segregated chess teams FFS?
I'm guessing the same reason as usual -- because the women were always winning.
@willaful @JenWojcik it's worse than that. They invented women's chess so that they wouldn't have to confront the rampant misogyny.
>Polgár,[15] Shahade[14] and Houska[17] have said that they have encountered sexism, including belittling comments about their abilities, opponents who refused to shake hands, and online trolls questioning if girls and women belong in chess.
@Tweetfiction @JenWojcik have they not seen The Queen's Gambit?!
(But in all seriousness, what nonsense. )
> The FIDE did not offer any justification or reason for the policy change that was updated in its handbook.
So it seems they've just pulled this out of their ass?
> The regulatory organisation that governs international chess competitions said that players who transition “from a male to a female” will not be allowed to play in women’s chess events until further notice which could take up to two years.
I have to ask though. Does FIDE assume that a male brain is stronger than a female brain in chess, and for this reason it could be considered cheating for such trans people to participate in women's contests? Additionally they assume that it doesn't change at all during the transition.
Oh boy, what a F mess.
