Unless you move your pieces around with your genitals, there is no goddamm good reason for CHESS COMPETITIONS to ban transgender players.

I MEAN COME THE FUCK ON.

For the folks amazed that chess competition would be segregated:

• Most women couldn't attend colleges or universities until well into the 20th century.
• Numerous Nobel Prizes have been awarded to men who stole research from women.
• Larger academic pursuits, major research positions, grants, etc. are still largely closed to women.

Academic gatekeeping is a tool of the patriarchy to keep us stupid, barefoot, and pregnant in the kitchen. This is part of that.

NOTE: NOT ALL OF THEM ARE. I KNOW

NOTE: NOT ALL OF THEM ARE. CHILL.
@JenWojcik Absolutely correct and factual, and terribly wrong!
@JenWojcik (And you also know someone is just waiting to say "How can you say that, here's a rare exception" --- but you beat them to the punch.)
@JenWojcik As a man, I am terribly embarrassed by this behavior.
@JenWojcik And if you are, chess just got a lot more exciting I guess (but they still shouldn't ban transgender players obviously).
@JenWojcik That’s stupidest thing I’ve heard today and I watched Fox News!
@JenWojcik there's no reason to have men's or women's leagues at all in chess.

@WagesOf @JenWojcik

The women's chess titles were apparently created comparatively recently, in order to encourage more women to play chess.

The top female chess player of all time, Judit Polgár, would be the 52nd strongest active player today, I just found out.

There isn't a "men's" division, it seems to be called "open" and women can and do participate.

This is what I learned in 10 minutes with Google, very interesting - no editorializing meant here, I simply had no idea.

@TomSwirly @WagesOf @JenWojcik while it's true that the women's division in chess doesn't exist for the same reasons as in athletics, it would then follow that excluding trans women is completely unjustifiable; there is no advantage that can be corrected by years of hormone therapy
@menachemschmuel @TomSwirly @JenWojcik I stand corrected, a women's league should exist because boys are mean and girls are icky.
@JenWojcik Exactly! Just ban the people who refuse to use their hands, feet, or mouth to move the pieces.
@JenWojcik What is the stated reason?

@matejpp @JenWojcik

(Other than transphobia) they didn't give one.

https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/fide-chess-ban-transgender-women-b2394457.html

And to add to the problem:

"Under the new guidelines, any transgender men who earned their titles in pre-transition period in a women’s tournament will be stripped of those achievements and the “abolished women title may be transferred into a general title of the same or lower level... But trans women who won titles in men’s events will be allowed to keep that title in full.”

International Chess Federation bans trans women with bizarre new policy

FIDE says players who transition ‘from male to female’ will not be allowed to play in women’s events

The Independent

@woodsbythesea @matejpp @JenWojcik The article is not accurate. There are no "men's" events or titles. There are general titles and events, and a separate system of "women's" titles. The new FIDE rule is that trans women keep the general titles they hold, but trans men don't keep their women-specific titles. That doesn't sound unreasonable to me.

(The unreasonable thing is that FIDE is barring trans women from women's events until they decide otherwise on a case-by-case basis. WTH is that?)

@woodsbythesea @matejpp @JenWojcik Just when you think the whole thing couldn’t possibly get more misogynistic or transphobic than it already is…
@JenWojcik Why The Hell is Chess gendered??? 😡
More Than Five Decades After Lisa Lane's Success, Equality Still Eludes Women in Chess

In 1961, Lisa Lane was a rising star in chess—until she disappeared from the spotlight to fight for equal opportunity, something women are still dealing with in the sport today.

Sports Illustrated
@JenWojcik They don't ban them from tiddlywinks contests. Or trivia night at the local bar.
@IveyJanette @JenWojcik But they will, and very soon, for no better reason but moral panic
@JenWojcik wait chess has gender divisions? What the fuck?
@depereo @JenWojcik
Weirder, they have open and women's division.

@JenWojcik @drahardja why is chess gendered to begin with?

@vmstan @drahardja I'm sorry...are y'all really this clueless?

EVERYTHING IS GENDERED SO AS TO EXCLUDE WOMEN FROM THEM.

IT HAS BEEN THIS WAY SINCE THE DAWN OF TIME.

@JenWojcik @vmstan @drahardja I am so angry. What are the “male” players afrai….
Ah, never mind.

@JenWojcik @vmstan @drahardja This has been an interesting thread!

Apparently women can and do compete in the "open" category, and there is a separate "women's" category as well.

Vera Menchik was the first woman to appear in international open competitions in the 1920s and 30s, until she was killed by the Fascists at the age of 38.

@vmstan @JenWojcik @drahardja It's not. Chess tournaments are accessible to all. Since they are heavily men dominated (for what I'd wager are totally non-biological reasons given the example of Judith Polgar) there are also women only tournaments and I assume those are the ones with old school views on womanhood.
@JenWojcik is this actually an issue somewhere? You are right; zero rationale.
@DanadasGrau I wouldn't have said anything if it wasn't...
@JenWojcik yeah, that first part was mostly a rhetorical question
@DanadasGrau I'm feeling pretty literal tonight.
@JenWojcik I saw the article in the independent after I read your post.
@JenWojcik they are implying that there is some innate advantage in the brains of men and trans women over the brains of cis women. It seems trans masc. playing in the mens division is not an issue though. Wonder why that is?

@JenWojcik Why are there even sex segregated chess teams FFS?

I'm guessing the same reason as usual -- because the women were always winning.

@willaful @JenWojcik not even, i bet, it only took women winning once for the olympics to segregate shooting sports.

@willaful @JenWojcik it's worse than that. They invented women's chess so that they wouldn't have to confront the rampant misogyny.

>Polgár,[15] Shahade[14] and Houska[17] have said that they have encountered sexism, including belittling comments about their abilities, opponents who refused to shake hands, and online trolls questioning if girls and women belong in chess.

@JenWojcik I can only assume the implication is that men are smarter than women, which is BS, but also we're not men. 🤷‍♀️

@Tweetfiction @JenWojcik have they not seen The Queen's Gambit?!

(But in all seriousness, what nonsense. )

@Tweetfiction @JenWojcik They have two categories, an open one for both genders, and a women only, so I think it's more to do with the women's tournament being a "protected space", which is a complete load of bull, and implies that the organisers don't care about trans women enough to even consider them women. To be honest I can see this being overturned by ruling bodies pretty quickly.
@JenWojcik This in a sport where a player was accused of using a remote control butt plug to cheat
@joyographic @JenWojcik does that really limit it much? I suspect remote control butt plugs are sold at my local sporting equipment retailer, Play It Again, Sports.
@JenWojcik pardon my ignorance, but isn’t chess competition open to all humans? I can’t comprehend division by gender or anything other than skill level.
Wait…that applies to more than chess…..
@JenWojcik oh god, please don't give them any ideas...
@JenWojcik

@JenWojcik I'm sorry, they're doing what?
@JenWojcik I'm confused as to why you would segregate men and women anyway.
@JenWojcik You’d think that a sport where a pawn can transition into a queen would be more understanding
@JenWojcik I agree. I don't know who came up with that insane crap, but they have no place making the rules LOL.
@JenWojcik I definitely wouldn't want to see a game played like that.
@JenWojcik maybe they are thinking that women are less intelligent...
I know this is horrible idea but after I have seen some ideas from anti-trans crowd I believe that some of them genuinely believe in this nonsense.
@JenWojcik I never understood why chess competitions are even divided by gender...
@xanoquita @JenWojcik they're not divided in the same way as athletics. The number of women in chess is way lower than it should be, just like in STEM fields, and the reasons why are up for debate but imo boil down to cultural issues. Tldr: women who get into chess are way more likely to face harassment. There is no men's league; only an open league and a women's league, which makes it easier for women to get noticed and chase sponsorships, hopefully encouraging more young girls to start playing
@JenWojcik I always thought it was spelled "Pawn".

@JenWojcik

> The FIDE did not offer any justification or reason for the policy change that was updated in its handbook.

So it seems they've just pulled this out of their ass?

> The regulatory organisation that governs international chess competitions said that players who transition “from a male to a female” will not be allowed to play in women’s chess events until further notice which could take up to two years.

I have to ask though. Does FIDE assume that a male brain is stronger than a female brain in chess, and for this reason it could be considered cheating for such trans people to participate in women's contests? Additionally they assume that it doesn't change at all during the transition.

Oh boy, what a F mess.
