As a very woke radical leftist I'm beyond tired of hearing people like ... Joe Biden and federal prosecutors(???) called "radical leftists."

They did not. They are not. They did not earn that title! That is mine! We are NOT the same OK?

Anyway, on the bright side, when real radical leftists start showing up what are the republicans gonna call us? "Super duper extra spicy double plus hot crossed buns radical left?" You spent your biggest move! You've got nowhere more shocking to go!

@futurebird

Also, if the real radical left shows up and they are given the label, then they get compared to Joe and go that's not so bad. #TrojanHorse

@futurebird this is why I don’t understand why democrats are scared to move too far to the left. conservatives have already been calling them communists for years and they’ll keep saying something like it no matter what
@bookybookman @futurebird because a good portion of them are just as economically conservative & tied to corporations as the right. The Democratic Party only ran out the last anti abortion rep in Biden’s election cycle iirc (and that had to overcome the financial support from the “centrist” house leadership & fundraising apparatus)
@metaphase @futurebird yeah I agree there, so my frustration is broader than elected officials. Around election time I always hear people say they would vote for x but they think y will do better against z, etc

@bookybookman @futurebird I think to replace the conservative elements in the Democratic Party, people who want the party to go more left (including me) need to focus on getting more local and regional representatives elected.

I mean weigh in on the more national offices, but we’ll keep losing those internal decisions often until we put on more and more people from the ranks below that want to go further left.

@metaphase @bookybookman @futurebird Yeah I don't think most Democrat leadership is "scared" to go left, they might use 'optics' as an excuse to not push stuff their voters care about more than they do, though
@bookybookman @futurebird Far left is not where the majority of Democrats are at present… nor are the moderates/persuadeable others that they need to win over. AOC can run as far left as she likes in her district. That district is never flipping red. The challenge is how to keep a broad coalition together that spans AOC’s district, Abigail Spanberger’s district, and everything in between
@dschwarz @futurebird that is the trick. meanwhile the republicans are somehow able to move their entire party further and further to the right without such concerns, shifting the goalpost of what many consider moderate to mean. frustrates me.

@futurebird I like to think Republicans just can't handle seeing a true "very woke radical leftist" and spontaneously combust from shock after learning what one is.

I mean, I come from the age where "radical" meant "super cool and probably wears a backwards cap". At a minimum, Biden has to pass some progressive policy AND pop an ollie (While I want the backwards hat I will allow him a helmet) before I will call him a radical leftist.

Also (sometimes my imagination gets away from me if you hadn't noticed lol) I like imagining IF (god forbid) we had another red scare, being hauled before it, and giving an angry response when asked about my evil "liebral biases"

Because imo a true leftist means you have to take someone calling you a liberal as an insult (and you should!)

@WesternInfidels @futurebird can't wait until these people do sick tricks standing in front of the house of unamerican activities lol
@futurebird
Joking aside, they want to flatten all distinctions amongst members of the opposition, so they're absolutely fine with losing that degree of finesse.
@futurebird a few weeks ago I was at the gym and saw Fox News repeatedly refer to the NYC district attorney as “far left.”
@psmaldino @futurebird Well he is definitely to the far left of Ron DeSantis.

@futurebird

… and they are rather considered “conservative/ liberal” from a European point of view - certainly not even “social democratic” which is right of “the Left” in Germany 🙄…

@futurebird (how to pin someone else's toot, etc)

(This speaks for me too)

@trochee @futurebird +1 application for quote toots..
@futurebird they'll call you pedophiles

@futurebird A conversation, circa 2013:

Coworker: "Of course Obama did [whatever he did that week], he's a socialist."
Me: "No he's not."
"How can you say that he isn't?"
"Because I'm a socialist, and I can't stand the guy*, he doesn't do nearly enough."
/coworker makes that Pikachu OMG face/

Didn't get included in many conversations after that.

*This wasn't a true statement, but in the context of a discussion with this specific coworker, you had to say things a certain way to make points.

@futurebird Biden is so far right of me, I can’t see him
@futurebird it’s truly not fair that the only people who get to live in the universe where Joe Biden is a hard line socialist are the right.

@StephAnne @futurebird

It is quite entertaining as a left wing Brit (and our ‘major left’ party is pretty centrist) to hear that the Democrats are ‘left’ at all 😂

They are basically our Tory party (right wing light by comparison to US conservatives)

I’m sure someone will come in and correct me but it’s defo how it looks from my perspective 😆

@futurebird The GOP attempt to marginalize median Democrats by labeling them “far left“ has nothing to do with actual leftist politics, just as GOP labeling of things as “critical race theory” has nothing to do with actual critical race theory. It’s just a convenient weapon.
@dschwarz @futurebird
You’re quite right, Dan. And we need to both remember this technique and call it out when we encounter it.
I suspect many who use the technique don’t recognize either the technique or the implications….
@dschwarz @futurebird The same goes for the actual far left calling median Dems “Corprate Dems” They are both practicing a form of “Negative Partisanship”
@futurebird it's one of the many ways in which they pretend to be moderates rather than fascists.

@futurebird

"Anyway, on the bright side, when real radical leftists start showing up what are the republicans gonna call us?"

Terrorists.

@futurebird It's in their interests to flatten their opposition. If everyone is either "us" or (((them))), they discourage compromise and intensify their in group bias
@futurebird Hell, in Alabama GOP primaries the candidates call each other radical leftists.
@futurebird
Generally, they call us terrorists.
@futurebird terrorist, pretty sure they already are
@futurebird It's true. Once you've spent the "Communist" label on the likes of BIden and normie Democrats, you've used up all your moves.
@futurebird Pretty sure "communist", "traitor", and "terrorist" are where they go next. 2 of which could be described as projection.
