Senators raise concerns about Bloc’s ‘flawed’ supply management bill

Bill C-282 passed the House of Commons at third reading 262-51, arriving in the Senate just prior to the Chamber rising for the summer.

@Paulatics Is there any context to why this is happening?

It seems odd that anyone inside Canada would want to exclude the government from being allowed to negotiate rate quotas. Wouldn't that favor extra-national interests?

I do understand that importers may be worried over price increases. Just seems like the wrong venue for that.

@wandrecanada It is a private member’s bill from a Bloc MP. Quebec has a big dairy industry, and dairy is supply managed commodity. The bill is about making supply management sacrosanct. Which I think hamstrings us at the negotiating table and makes it harder for us to call out similar trade barriers erected by other nations.

@Paulatics Thanks for the response! That sounds like exactly what I thought it would be.

I'm honestly surprised it made it to 3rd reading. Can't believe the MPs let it get that far.
