#introduction Hi, I’m new here, but I’m giving this Mastodon thing a try! I’m an ecologist by training, currently teaching intro bio to undergrads. I’m an #insect enthusiast with particular love for #bees, #wasps and other garden critters. I have a chaotic good #vegetablegarden and plant lots of #nativeplants for the yard critters. I’m also a #twinmom and #vegetarian #cook. Don’t have a #dog yet but I love to see photos of your #dogs. What are you #reading right now?
@faye Now, I'm reading you!😂 Welcome! ✌️
@faye Hi Faye, welcome! I'm currently reading Barbara Kingsolver's Homeland short stories, and Statistics in a Nutshell for a refresher.
I have a greenhouse with tomatoes and peppers, not dogs, but four cats, that we fostered and could not let go of.
I grow a wildflower garden as well for the bees and hummingbirds in our area.

@faye
Well... at the moment I'm reading your introduction. Well, I was up til I thought I'd say HI 👋 and welcome aboard. 😁

So HI 👋 and welcome aboard ☺️

@faye

Welcome! I'm reading book 8 of Malazan Book of the Fallen series.

I do not recommend the series at all. I'm only reading it because my partner highly recommended it. After book 2, I realized I hated his writing style, but now I want to figure out what the heck he thought was so important to write 10 ungodly long poorly written books about it, and why so many people like it.

@MCDuncanLab @faye The last books of the Malazan series aren't that different. A few more "bad guys are good guys and good guys are bad guys" twists and that's it. It does, at least, resolve satisfactorally.

I really liked the first book but after that it got too bleak. I'm not really sure why I drove myself to finish the entire series.

@CurtAdams @faye

I blame my persistence on the pandemic. I started the series when we were still in the tail end of the lockdown, and I wanted something to fill the time. But then worked kicked in and I've been slow about finishing the series and even read a couple of N. K. Jemisin series in the interim. I've loved everything of hers that I've read.

I'd say this book is better than a lot in the series, I think because there is more character development and less action.

@faye welcome! 🙂

may i ask your opinion as an ecologist? is earth already screwed?

i'm in between novels, #reading Catwatching by Desmond Morris...

@faye Just finishing up Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver.

@faye Welcome! I share a number of your interests, and would love to hear more about your life.

I’m reading too many things at once, as usual. Today I’m beginning The Covenant of Water by Abraham Verghese. What are you reading?

@faye

Welcome 👋👋👋

As requested...dog photos...

@faye this isnt mastodon, but its close enough
@faye I hope u suggest some veggie recipes
@faye Welcome to Mastodon! 😊
@faye Recently finished Wild Seed by Octavia Butler, Dead Before Dark by Charlene Harris, In the Lives of Puppets by TJ Klune, and The Magician's Daughter by HG Perry. All excellent.
@faye Hi! Welcome to Mastodon! 🤗

@faye hello Faye! Welcome to #mastodon! I also have a chaotic #vegetablegarden and #flower #garden as well.

Nice to see you here! Hope to see more of you!

#gardening #love

@faye hi Faye,

I'm a botanist & conservation scientist with Agriculture Canada. At the moment I'm reading #NoGodsNoMonsters by #CadwellTurbull. So far the writing is engaging and the plot is intriguing and unsettling contemporary fantasy.

Welcome to the fediverse!

@faye reading the Sand Chronicles by Hugh Howey. We have doggies and my husband is a macro photographer of insects!
@faye Beeeeeees! 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝
@faye this is Gus-Gus our three legged rescue, fellow #insect enthusiast here, try to submit daily insect observations to iNaturalist, and enjoy my pollinator garden
@faye Welcome! 😊 I'm currently reading "The Believer" by Ralph Blumenthal. Fascinating book.
@faye Hi Faye! I also garden for biodiversity and post on that often. Just posted a dog for #TongueOutTuesday.
@faye Lools like I am your first follower!
@faye One of my friends here is an absolute ant fanatic. I'll try to hook you up next time she shows up in my stream
@faye This guy’s so cute I snapped a photo before snapping at him to get off! His name is Elliot Mess and he’s a Decker Rat Terrier. I have other dogs who know better.
@faye Faye, welcome! Be sure to put up some posts so people get a feel for you and want to follow you. Insect photos are nearly as popular as dog photos, I think. Check out #bookstodon I’m currently reading The Book of Form and Emptyness by Ruth Ozeki, and loving it. @owlislost is a good person to follow for books.
@fondoffawns @faye @owlislost Yes, welcome! A note about photos: There are a good number of people with visual disabilities on Mastodon and they greatly appreciate inclusion of alt text with images. I just finished That All Shall be Saved by David Bentley Hart, I'm most of the way through Carry On, Jeeves by Wodehouse, and I'm about to start The Gutenberg Parenthesis by Jeff Jarvis. Also about halfway through reading Language of Thorns by Leigh Bardugo aloud to my wife.
@faye Hi, welcome! Your intro post popped up in my feed because of the native plant hashtag. Glad to meet you. 😊
@faye Hi Faye, Welcome. I'm reading The Devil's Cave by Martin Walker. Part of a crime series set in the Dordogne and learning about French provincial life with wine, truffles and cooking on the side.
You may like to follow @bookstodon or #bookstodon, many great discussions and book recommendations there.
Love to hear about your garden, although mine is on a balcony now.

@faye hello! found this via someone on my server boosting it. I love love love #insects and follow that hashtag and #bugstodon, among others.

I have been re-reading "House of Leaves" but while for fun I love science fiction, unfortunately nowadays I find myself mostly reading municipal budget reports for work.

@faye welcome! I’m reading Connie Willis’ latest, The Road to Roswell, and I’m re-reading Annie Dillard’s Pilgrim at Tinker Creek.
@faye Welcome! It's better here (or at least I think so). 🌟
@faye welcome! Pepper says hi, also.
@faye
Welcome! Some useful tags:

@faye Welcome. Reading Sunfall by Jim Al-Khaldi, bit of a techie thriller about earth's possible demise. Frustrated by neolibrilistic politics. Vote Green.
@faye @rorystarr Right now I’m reading “In the Morning I’ll Be Gone” by Adrian McKinty, one of his Sean Duffy novels set in Northern Ireland during the “Troubles”.

@faye Morning Faye, i tend to do crap dad jokes but here is a picture of my dog Domino running down the oldest military airfield in the world

Montrose Airfield
Scotland.

@faye hiya. Here's a nice #bee for you.

@faye

Welcome to Mastodon!

I'm reading Essential Linguistics currently.

That reminds me, there's another app called #BookWyrm that is an open source alternative to Goodreads (which is owned by Amazon). I need to update my BookWyrm!

@faye @JustinDerrick Welcome. I’m a #twinmum twice. Also pup-mama to Tilly. Not much of a gardener, though. A few herbs and whatever my trees drop at my feet (and the birds leave). Reading SJParris’s Prophecy in English and Donna Leon’s L’Inconnue du Grand Canal in French. Neither terribly taxing, but I like a whodunnit.
@faye Dog picture 😁 I also have a chaotic yard, full of veggies, herbs and cats. I also have two Bee hives, 9 chickens and several Madagascar hissing cockroaches.
@faye forgot to add- currently reading a collection of short mystery stories “The Mysterious Bookshop Presents. . .” The 2022 version. Also “The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires”.

@faye Hello - I look forward to seeing more about insects. I do like #bees but have problems with #wasps - I would love to know more about them so that I can try to be more understanding of them as they come for my picnic!

No #dogs but plenty of #coffee !
Enjoy Mastodon.

@faye Welcome to the Fediverse Faye! 😃🖖Big fan of insects here,too.
@faye Welcome to mastodon! Looking forward to plenty of bee pics
@faye Wecome. I'm currently reading "Blood Meridian" by Cormac McCarthy.
@faye Just finished "Harlem Shuffle" by Coulson Whitehead and am awaiting the arrival of his "Underground Railroad."
@faye Welcome and hope you’re enjoying it so far! I just finished the recent audiobook of The Fellowship of the Ring. It’d been a couple decades since I’d read it last and this new edition is read by Andy Serkis! I really enjoyed it.
