(1/5) Around 2009 we had a family bereavement and a bit of a windfall. We treated it as a ‘most for our old age, a bit for us now’ occasion and I found myself with £3500 to invest.

On to eBay (sober!)… We had a sensible #Berlingo, we had a plaything #MidasGold. What did I need?

What did eBay turn up 15 miles from home? A 1960 #Riley 4/68 in the most desirable Bermuda blue over cream colour scheme.

(2/5) After a little haggling, and an unexpected auction when someone who had previously pulled out turned up on the doorstep, the #Riley was mine for exactly the amount I had in my pocket.

(3/5) Mechanically, she ran sweetly but had largely only travelled to local shows since being rescued. Overheating at anything over 40mph was resolved by a radiator beautifully restored by http://pandmradiators.co.uk/ in Norwich, the regular foot massage was fixed by skimmed brake drums and new linings, and rubber leaks were replaced with seals on the clutch and wheel cylinders.

(4/5) Like many older ladies around these parts, if she stands in one place too long she leaves a small puddle, but that’s one of the joys of BMC ownership.

She’s been from Norfolk to Yorkshire and back for a holiday, to Southwold for a day trip, and many other places besides. She’s now a car rather than a show queen. The 1489cc B-series lump is not over-endowed for hauling her around but she keeps up on A-roads.

(5/5) Newly returned from two years in storage to her place in our freshly-built garage she’s looking a little forlorn at the moment, having lost her windscreen to a stone flicked up by a Transit just before we moved.

She’ll get a new screen as soon as I’ve tended to a blemish on the screen surround and will be on the road again in the not-too-distant future!
