When there's some meaningful difference between octopuses and squids that effects the show and character in some way, maybe then I'll start caring. But him having a rounded head isn't proof he's an octopus (some squids have rounded heads) and him having only six tentacles isn't proof he's a squid. It's a constant #retcon.
Like look at #AbleSisters from #AnimalCrossing. Dialogue refers to them as both hedgehogs and porcupines. Yeah I know that's probably because it's a translation, but people don't fight about it. It's just accepted that they are either. Same with #Squidward. Octopus or squid, he can be whatever you want him to be. He is a Renaissance man, after all. Stop fighting. They are both right answers.
