We enjoyed another stellar Cook At Home from #JoeryCastel tonight.
My (lack of) plating skills don’t do justice to how tasty everything was. And no more than 20-30 mins effort needed on our part.
- Grilled chicken thigh, satay, veg
- Lobster bisque, prawns & garlic cream
- BBQ tritip, smoked beef fritter, pommes anna, veg
- Frozen strawberry tartlet

It was all washed down with a superb 2008 Central Otago Pinot Noir from @twopaddocks.
This is the last bottle from the case I bought years ago, and it was singing - drinking beautifully.
All in all, a perfect Saturday night at home.

@AngieYWine I'm one of the few people who didn't know he was an actor when I tasted his wine.
@seanddotmedotuk I’ve been a fan since I was a young girl watching The Omen 😆
@seanddotmedotuk
Central Otago is my favourite region in NZ and we’ve visited 4 or 5 times over the years.

@AngieYWine That's quite a trek!

I've heard various people raving about New Zealand, but it's a place I've never felt a strong desire to visit.

Currently drinking a Monastrell from Valencia. Much easier to visit. 😃

@seanddotmedotuk
indeed. It’s been about 7 or 8 years since we were last around those parts
@AngieYWine Is a long time since we were in Valencia. However on my birthday in 2019, we went to a Monastrell growing vineyard in Jumilla. (Bodega Juan Gil). Was a fantastic day.

@seanddotmedotuk It’s a stunning country, with great food, amazing wine, and brilliant locals. It’s only downside is being so darn far away.

@AngieYWine

@shezza_t @AngieYWine Yeah, the distance is the main thing that puts me off. There are so many interesting places that I have yet to visit that are easier to get to!
@seanddotmedotuk That’s exactly what I said to my NZ cousin. Living in Europe, there’s such a wide variety of countries we can reach in around the time it takes her to fly from North Island to South Island.
@AngieYWine
@shezza_t @AngieYWine When I visited Australia I disliked it for several reasons, but a big one was that apart from the dangerous animals and the dangerous sunshine it didn't feel sufficiently different for a place I'd spent over 24hrs travelling to get to.

@seanddotmedotuk I know what you mean. But I loved the way parts of NZ almost looked like Ireland or Scotland, and then the next parts looked alien.

@AngieYWine

@shezza_t @AngieYWine We have that here. Ireland and Scotland look like Ireland and Scotland and then a short flight away Iceland looks alien. 😃

Admittedly the cost of your stay would probably be more expensive than a holiday to New Zealand!

@seanddotmedotuk All of which is very true. What struck me about NZ was the feeling I could happily live there.
@AngieYWine

@shezza_t @AngieYWine I often come back from holiday thinking like that about a place, then over-think it and convince myself it would probably be horrible after all.

That's probably just a coping mechanism to stop myself becoming too depressed about living here!

@shezza_t @seanddotmedotuk I felt exactly the same way about NZ. We looked into options for moving to NZ about 15 years ago, but in the end decided not to, simply because it was so far away from everywhere else.
@AngieYWine @shezza_t You'd probably miss European wine after a while too. 😃
@shezza_t @seanddotmedotuk it is possible to buy wines from other countries in NZ you know 😂
@AngieYWine Plus you’re no stranger to getting wine shipped halfway around the world. @seanddotmedotuk
@shezza_t @AngieYWine Ok, ok, I get it, there's a nice trade agreement with New Zealand now and they'll have the same selection as we do! 😃

@shezza_t @AngieYWine Is Maori culture celebrated much there?

When I was in Oz, the indigenous people were mainly talked about in racist terms and we didn't really encounter much of it.

@seanddotmedotuk Speaking only as a tourist, it seems respected and celebrated. There’s a lot of evidence of the language and art everywhere. North Island has a larger population, so I saw more Māori people there.

I think they do experience racism, my elderly uncle was a sad example of that, and I don’t expect the impacts of colonialism to have been undone so quickly.

I think their increasing representation in community leadership and political roles will help.

@AngieYWine

@shezza_t @AngieYWine That all sounds like it's moving in the right direction.
@seanddotmedotuk @shezza_t @AngieYWine I’ve been to both Oz and NZ multiple times and I can vouch for both your interpretations. Oz has a deep undercurrent of “respectable” racism, particularly against aboriginal people, that NZ has no analogue of.
@seanddotmedotuk @shezza_t @AngieYWine I suspect the historical root is that when Europeans arrived, the Maori had farms, cities, and a king, and were therefore afforded a degree of respect that “uncivilised” Aboriginals were not. The British made a treaty with the Maori. It was broken of course, but the fact that it was necessary to make one in the first place says a lot about the difference in how they were perceived.
@shezza_t @seanddotmedotuk @andrewg I agree, Andrew. Australians don’t show/express the same amount of respect to Aboriginals as New Zealanders do Māori. And I found racism to be much more evident in Australia.
@AngieYWine @seanddotmedotuk I have such a fondness for Marlborough. Otago makes me think of whiskey, even though I've enjoyed a bottle or two of Two Paddocks. Guess I need more Otago wines in my life!
@seanddotmedotuk @OpinionatedGeek
So many great producers in Central Otago making superb Pinot Noir. Felton Road, Rippon & Wooing Tree are among my favourites.
@AngieYWine His satay is fantastic!
@AngieYWine
I think you underestimate your plating skills, these look amazing! 👌
