My reading plans for August include my ongoing read of the Kakegurui #manga, Babel by R.F. Kuang (my bookclub selection this month), and maybe some horror/thrillers. And I will actually maintain my #AugustReads thread!

1. Kakegurui 4 by Homura Kawamoto & Toru Naomura

I read Kakegurui before it was licensed by Yen Press & I've watched both seasons of the #anime, but last month, I decided it was time to read the English edition of the #manga! πŸƒ

I'm a big fan of gambling comics in general, actually. I'm currently reading a couple webtoons that have similar themes, but really, nothing hits the spot like Kakegurui, which has such great characters and over-the-top plots. Give me crazy women and ridiculous set-ups, please! The only series that I've liked as much in this genre is Liar Game, which is never going to get licensed. πŸ’” (My villain origin story, really.)

As an aside, please let me say that the covers of the print editions are next level killer.

2. Kakegurui 5 by Homura Kawamoto & Toru Naomura

Wild, reckless gambling women will always be the best. πŸ’―

I completely forgot about the Yumeko + Itsuki vs Kaede match! Such a great match.

3. Jujutsu Kaisen 13 by Gege Akutami

I originally read #jujutsukaisen in serialization, but I'm revisiting the series via collected volume form while the second season of the #anime is airing.

I'm not sure if I'll keep reading past the Shibuya arc because I personally think the plot goes downhill from here, but you never know! Still a few more volumes to go, anyway.

4. The Summer Hikaru Died 1 by Mokumokuren

My first read inspired by IG!

I'd seen previews of this #manga, but I wasn't paying attention and got the wrong impression.  I think I thought this was a #BL manga about getting over someone's death or maybe looking into a murder and/or imposter? This series isn't that at all! This is a #horror manga!!

Anyway, Yoshiki and Hikaru are besties who live in a small rural town and have burgeoning feelings for each other. Then Hikaru goes for a hike in the mountains one day. What comes back LOOKS like Hikaru but isn't. Yoshiki knows the thing isn't his best friend, but it looks so much like Hikaru and likes him so much...

I thought the first half was kinda ho-hum but then there's this scene that leans into the whole eldritch horror thing and I was all in.  Really looking forward to the next volume.

Please, everyone, let's observe a moment of silence. πŸͺ¦

@blackmagie ooh that’s really intriguing
@blackmagie Oooh, I've been following this one and it's quite a fun (albeit horror, supernatural-ish) read!
