Jake in the desert

Moved the hacked PS1 mini (it has like 80+ games on it now thanks to Autobleem, the most important of them being Diablo) to the living room to start up a new Diablo run. I beat it two years ago in September and I started my run(s) in August 2021. Something about August and fall, I guess. Last time, I tried a sorcerer but struggled til I switched to fighter, which I beat it with. This time, I'm trying a rogue. Never tried rogue before. Should be wild. Time for tons of saving and leaving all my gear on the ground in town! 🤣

Update - I played a little bit yesterday and today, my rogue Alathra is now level 5. Cleared out floors 1 and 2 except for the butcher, trying to get a little more experience down on floor 3 here etc before I tackle him.

It's SO much fun (I always have to speed it up though, the regular walk is so slow -- there's a tip for ya, as long as you can deal with slightly faster monsters. It's a game changer for me).

It's just a thrill every time I play this game. I always forget how much I love its AMAZING soundtrack and sound effects. I remember first seeing it at my friends house when it first came out, and I've been hooked ever since.

Alathra's now level 16 and I'm starting in on floor 9, which is of course where that difficulty ramps up! However, I just went back to kill the Butcher and now I'm gonna take out Leoric. The Butcher was SO easy to take out with a level 16 rogue 🤣 I figure Leoric will be too. Diablo tip - wait to kill these two til later, when you're stronger! 🔥

Well, I kept hitting a wall at floor 9 in my PS1 mini Diablo run, so I just saved my character and restarted the whole game to respawn monsters. Had to sell my extra stuff and they took the special stuff (Arkaines Valor, etc) but I bought a new helmet and armor and now maybe I can get a little bump before trying floor 9 again. Argh!

Still working my way back down to floor 9, gradually, just hangin out a little, grabbing up good gear. Got a better bow.

Every time I come back to town to sell stuff, I feel Griswold eyeing my badass backup axe, the unique and indestructible Wicked Axe, (that I'm keeping to thrash those jerks up close that instantly surround you on floor 9).

Not gonna happen, man. 🤣

Finally making some damn progress on level 9 in Diablo with my rogue run.

A big key for the rogue here is firing arrows toward where you know the monsters are (once you've died from them enough times to learn, ffs) to taunt them to come over near one of these wood enclosures with the door.

Then, you run inside, close the door, and fire out, chugging health potions. It works. They run over fast and want to surround you. My rogue Alathra is level 18 now, and pretty tough (Arkaines Valor etc) but if the monsters surround you on floor 9, they'll just kill you over and over. You can't even chug potions fast enough.

So I fully filled my inventory with health potions, had a town portal ready to go, kept saving every time I killed a few more, and I think I'm finally getting somewhere now.

I mean, I kept dying here a LOT. Was even trying Stone Curse, melee weapons, anything. It was brutal. Maybe now I can progress some more.

Down in level 13 (and Alathra is now level 20). Was thankfully able to skip a lot of level 11, as those damn demons there kept surrounding me and killing me- but the succubi and other demons aren't too bad now since I found this BADASS bow that adds 101% damage. Almost breezing through level 13. Only a couple more to go!

Lots of decapitated bodies down here.

Killed Lazarus, and I'm at the end - exactly 30 days after starting my run as Alathra the rogue! I like to take it fairly slow, and I have. Now for the big demon himself. I suspect I won't have too much trouble - Lazarus is usually tougher and he was pretty much a breeze. Rogue arrows ftw! Find or buy a good bow!

Beat Diablo as a level 25 rogue today on 9/7/2023 - 30 days after starting it. (After the quick cinematic at the end, it takes you back to this intro screen).

Was reminded by this that the games really have gotten easier since the beginning, Diablo 1 might be the hardest of them all, if memory serves me correctly.

@Lunalucardrose20 ha! I did beat 3.. didn't beat 4. I've been working on FULLY beating 2, like, all 3 difficulties, which is tough for me.. I'm in Nightmare I think or something.. keep getting merc'd by fuckin Diablo himself. And I'm a POWERFUL necro. It's nuts. I was trying out a few different classes. Hammerdin, etc. Fun. I'll probably never beat it hah. First is my passion.

@Englebert3rd @dabbling_duck @Vyothric @ellestad it really is! Modding it to add games was so easy - Autobleem is a breeze. It has 80+ games on it now. Some amazing shooters and a couple other platformers I need to try to get somewhere in- but who am I kidding. It's mostly a portable Diablo machine. hahaha

@jake4480 I managed to luck out years ago and bought the soundtrack. The same composer wrote the soundtrack for Torchlight and I bought that too. I keep them in my music rotation.

@brettmn 🤣 he straight up killed me a few minutes ago. I've died several times now but the best part of Diablo 1 is saving anywhere and being able to leave stuff in town. Damn butcher. I need to be stronger haha

@brettmn totally. I guess they changed that in II to just in town but then when you do all the monsters reset to be more fair or something? Which bugs me. Today, I saved 3 times through a fight with those little stupid 4 legged creatures, you try to make a choke point but they slip around and surround you like jerks. With 1, you can really pick and choose your own way. I've skipped beating the 2 big boss battles so far because I'm trying to get my character stronger. I saw you can save the GAME and you can also save the CHARACTER, so I'm doing both this time, in case I hit a wall where I keep dying, and I believe you can reset the game's monsters (strategically is cool) so you can build up some more experience that way. Ah, Diablo. 🥰

@brettmn oh and as for IV- I did play the beta with a barb and a necro, the graphics are so beautiful. But yeah from 2 and on, Blizzard's focus on certain quests in order, too linear. I get it, the story. I dig it. Maybe I want a game like Diablo or Torchlight that doesn't have/need much of a story, just for dungeon crawlin. That's why I love traditional roguelikes. And the battle pass stuff.. It's exhausting. They always push coop. I'm not into it. My friends always ask me to and I just don't have a lot of time. I gotta squeeze it in. I also don't like big boss battles in games, I play normal, not hardcore. And I even played a bunch of Immortal, the mobile one. It's fun to a point. But then it's a drag. Certain quests I don't like 😂 Don't know if you saw, since the console versions of IV can do couch co-op, my wife will try Diablo for the first time when I get IV! I'm so psyched to play with her. She's so good at games. She's playing a Wii U in bed next to me right now 😂🤣

@jake4480 Rogues are more beginner-friendly than the other two classes. You are kind of squishy, but you can kite a lot of mobs into doorways, which makes the last half of the game more enjoyable. If you get trapped between mons though… Good luck and have fun, that game is amazing!

@chrisn heck yeah! Oh yeah choke points were my friend even with a warrior. I love how fast and accurately she shoots! I haven't even come close to dying yet, those ranged attacks are so awesome.

@Lunalucardrose20 oh they're amazing. Probably .. no, definitely the easiest to hack of the ones I have, which are NES, SNES and that. I heard the C64 one is even easier, they WANT you to hack it haha. That was gonna be my next one. I'm so unfamiliar with C64 games. But like, I have ENOUGH stuff, yknow? haha. Soon I will get better pics of stuff. Just never time.
