Anyone who boasts about their “net-zero by 2050” plan, but can’t say what they are doing to make steep emissions cuts *this year* is selling you a steaming pile of bullshit
#ClimateChange #EmissionsCuts #NetZero
@steve Well, unless they sell the package in, say, Phoenix, where there's just no way it would steam 😜

@steve

Anyone who talks about net zero full stop is full of bs.

@steve

I've got a very light requirement in terms of actual action.

Natural gas has to go, right? It has to. We must stop heating space with it, replace every furnace with a heat pump. Is that even controversial, scientifically? It's obvious and inescapable.

So, why don't governments say that, and announce their plan?

1) No more new subdivisions with gas lines. 100% heat pump.

2) Replace furnaces by district, valve off their gas. Schedule for this.

Nobody has such a plan.

@RoyBrander @steve

I read this was being done in some European countries.

@tasket @RoyBrander @steve
Maine, here in the USA, is making great progress replacing all of their fossil fueled heating with #HeatPumps too.

@steve @RoyBrander Yes, and…

No more highway expansions ever; just contractions.

Replace urban “free”ways with transit, bike/walk paths, and normal streets for deliveries, tradespeople, emergency vehicles & such.

For intercity transport, use electrified trains as much as practical. Don’t supersize the Interstates; supersize clean alternatives. And definitely don’t run interstates through the heart of city because that inevitably ruins the city.

@RoyBrander @steve Victoria, Australia has banned new gas connections to homes from the start of next year https://reneweconomy.com.au/fossil-gas-ban-victoria-calls-time-on-gas-connections-for-new-homes/
Fossil gas ban: Victoria calls time on gas connections for new homes

Planning permits for new homes will only connect to all-electric networks in 2024, marking a major about face for the state with the highest residential gas use in Australia.

@Maddogeco @steve

Wonderful to hear! I knew somebody could do it, so now, what's everybody else's excuse?

It is fair to point out we can only manufacture new heat pumps so fast. But a national program could stay inside an envelope of changeover-rates that ensures they aren't required until they can be supplied.

We're going to need whole new heat-pump factories...

@RoyBrander @steve Now New South Wales is under pressure to follow Victoria. Hopefully these decisions provide clear signals to the heat pump makers to increase production.

@RoyBrander @steve Where will the electricity come from to power it? We need to upgrade the grid so it can provide the power to run these heat pumps. We also need more wind and solar power. If the power is generated by burning fossil fuels, we haven't gained anything.

We also need to ramp up production of heat pumps, as there are not enough of them being made fast enough to replace all those heating systems, and the cost is unaffordable for many owners, especially in older buildings that don't have central air conditioning and/or forced hot-air heating, as those will require ductwork to be installed throughout.

@steve Net zero seems to be the same approach we used to take to those summer homework projects they set us at school. Ones that we were supposed to take the whole of the summer holiday to complete (which would have been pretty painless, just small bits of work at a time.) But that we actually did the weekend before the new term started, in a great big panic.

@steve It's #LyingWithNumbers because one can literally buy "#CO2 #Neutrality" with products.

The product didn't get more envoirmentally, but one can just literally buy an Indulgence instead.
