I moved to a walkable neighborhood and I see kids outside all of the time

i guess it wasn't video games or phones that were the problem after all

@cube_drone my neighbors kids are outside all day when they aren’t at school. It’s annoying sometimes because she doesn’t supervise them. I heard a loud crash like something broke and one of them start crying yesterday. I was on my way over to go help when I heard her mom finally come out to help her. But yeah, kids play outside all the time.
@cube_drone
I see all these kids at the park near me, chilling out, playing games, riding bikes, and sometimes...some of them are on their phones! Disgraceful! [Heavy sarcasm]

@cube_drone THIS

I have direct, lived experience of this with my own children, who are currently playing outside with friends, instead of being on screens, for exactly this reason.

Oh, and guess why my neighborhood is walkable? It’s because it’s a small village that is literally older than the United States of America.

@cube_drone Same! Look down my street and you'll see a dozen basketball hoops. Kids are EVERYWHERE. You'd think it's 1987 out here.
@cube_drone
Truth! I'm constantly trying to avoid gangs of screaming vermin in my tootles. Why aren't they inside playing video games? 🤣
@cube_drone in my own experience, I stopped playing outside regularly when the neighborhood playground got removed due to"liability". Video games became the only option.
@cube_drone One of my daughters got her foot run over while using the crosswalk a couple blocks from our house, and her older sister got PTSD from it so bad she won't cross that street at all anymore. She's 17.
@cube_drone My home town became walkable 20 years ago, the whole city center has traffic restrictions. Now you can see kids everywhere and the city feels more alive than ever: https://mastodon.social/@dmoser/110831613835754096
@cube_drone VGs and phones are just how you distract from a drab and uninhabitable outside world

@cube_drone

*man who lives in a gated community with no sidewalks full of paranoid gun nuts who shoot trespassers and /call the police on kids *

Damn kids always on their phone never go out back In my day blahblah

@cube_drone I grew up in the burbs and never want to go back. The closest shops to us was 5km and there wasn’t a sidewalk. We’d play in our neighborhood as younger kids but as we got older there wasn’t anything to do.
@cube_drone
Ohhhh.
Lightbulb moment.
I live in a semi-rural area and there are always kids walking around, playing, meeting at the park, walking to the beach, chatting with the neighbours and getting up to all sorts of fun / mischief. Now I see why I didn't think the screen issue is as bad as people made out.
I think you're onto something there.
