I am tonight preoccupied by this advert. It’s been turning up on heavy rotation on my YouTube viewing of late.

Such a bizarre pairing, which raises so many questions.

The statement of specifically referencing ‘in 700 years time’ suggest a knowing nod and wink to the historical invention of deodorant. Yet The Witcher is not a historical piece. It’s fantasy.

What is going on here?

Ode to Smell | Old Spice x The Witcher

YouTube

I am not discarding the notion that the general citizens of the Northern Realms may smell a little bit on the ripe side. Away from the wealth of court at the major cities very few seem to have much in the way of sanitation. Baths are quite big in The Witcher. But not an every day occurrence.

But arguing about realism in Fantasy properties is invariably a bit of a silly point.

It’s like people who rant about the authenticity of weapons in Game of Thrones. Or how the Nords of Skyrim don’t wear authenticly Viking armour.

That’s comparing apples to oranges. Authentic to what? How do you know?

Why mention Vikings? There are no Vikings in Skyrim. Because Vikings were real and Skyrim is not…

I dunno. I just find it a bit random that we are fleshing out a timeline for a fantasy universe which marks in place that in 7 centuries time they will invent the roll-on deodorant, when this is a universe which also has literal frickin *magic* in it.

Quite aside from the fact that this advent will be branded by Old Spice, we are apparently celebrating this invention ahead of the invention of say water pipes, plumbing or basic sanitation.

That and, you know, this is a universe in which you could just as easily MAGIC YOURSELF CLEAN.

But where’s the product placement in that?
