Hello to our new followers, which, for the one and only time, is everyone...

We'll be verifying our account very soon, but in the meantime, our top level domain should hopefully help confirm our identity, and we've also written about why we're here on Mastodon, what was involved to get here, and the other BBC accounts you can follow.

Say hi, follow and give us a boost!

The BBC on Mastodon: experimenting with distributed and decentralised social media

Trialling ActivityPub and the federated model for social media and it's possibilities for the BBC.

BBC R&D

The BBC starting a fedi server is a good step and a pretty big deal. Only using it for BBC staff is the right move. If they should decide to host randoms they should do it from a different domain anyway.

Will be interesting to see how their six month experiment proceeds. How their moderation of replies works and how they'll report or defed other servers as required.

Will Facebook turn on federation before the experiment is over?

Hope it goes well and they continue afterwards and indefinitely. Be nice to them everyone.

BBC Mastodon

This was our first reaction, but they are giving money, power and influence to Amazon for the privalege, of access to fedi. Thus defeating the purpose.

@dsfgs @BBCRD

:shrug: and my server is hosted on Hetzner. Either of us can easily move should the need arise. They are probably backing up off-site better than I am.

@BBCRD @pre

Hetzner is not Amazon, though. It may be big, but it is not Amazon. We cannot keep feeding such an #internetCancer as Amazon. In Australia there are no independent banks left that do not go through either Cloudflare, Amazon, or Akamai.

These technoFascists grow like cancer because they are fascist. If BBC go through them they cannot be editorially independent of them either.
