We need to talk about ULEZ (UK). But not for the reasons you think.

The real cause of concern is its use of automatic number plate recognition and the free access to this data given to the Met Police for surveillance.

If UK politicians truly cares about the state of air pollution and the environment, they can’t ignore how the fear of surveillance could undermine climate goals.

@openrightsgroup hi, long time supporter here. I'm really disappointed to read this, I think it's the wrong take. It will slow the adoption of much needed measures to reduce their use and allow for alternatives. Motor vehicles are dangerous tools, increasingly used as weapons, and should be highly regulated, including tracking of anyone using them (without relying on them not tampering with a box in their car). Pls focus on allowing people to use public transport without needing card payments.

@linuxlucy @openrightsgroup Seconding this. Car usage is not a fundamental human right, is harmful, and is in public. Unnecessary driving in a city is antisocial behaviour. Any data gathered should obviously be used carefully but I feel you're adding to a fire here, not helping things.
