Hey, if you're in Washington state, please call Senator Cantwell's office. According to this article (paywall-free link), Cantwell is one of the people pushing hardest for KOSA, which Republicans have admitted will be used to drive LGBTQIA+ content off the internet. (Everyone else, also please call your Senators!)

Privacy debate takes center stage in kids’ online safety legislation

A Senate panel advanced two bills on Thursday, but they’ve gotten pushback from privacy advocates.

The Washington Post

Honestly if they got rid of the thing allowing all 50 state attorney generals to sue whenever they can cite "evidence" of harm...

...it would still be a horrible bill. But it would no longer spell the end of queer people online.

@charliejane

I Always get so bloody angry when the 'safety of children' motivation is fished up again / abused to force through horrible legislation, fit for nations like China.
There's Chatcontrol here in the EU.
Few will protest, because who doesn't want to 'protect the children', right? And few care to look into what these two proposals actually mean, and what kind of consequences they will have for free speech, privacy, and online safety.
It's sickening.

Reply-boosting with CWs: uspol, KOSA, call to action for WA residents

via @charliejane

@charliejane Done. Senator Cantwell's office was very nice, and thanked me commenting. If anyone is nervous about calling, I'll offer that as reassurance.
@charliejane Submitted a contact form to her.
@charliejane @thomasfuchs Thanks for the warning, I was aware of KOSA but not that Cantwell was involved. As a WA resident, I just contacted her office.
@charliejane Is Microsoft pushing this bill?
@AlgoCompSynth No idea. I have friends who speculate that the big tech companies don't mind this bill because they'll have the resources to cope with stringent requirements tho.
@charliejane that could explain the lack of reply from my recent attempt to contact her on this issue.

@charliejane Ty! we generally like our senators but sometimes they need to hear that well intended actions can enable the opposite of their intentions.
@charliejane Another thing to note: some of the related bills that have already reached the Senate floor are being blocked by Sen. Ron Wyden (the father of #Section230). These are: S.1080, S.1199, S.1207.
