enjoying the 1000mbps down here in london
@craigmod fast internet and low temperatures in summer. What more could you wish for?
@heejeroen @craigmod we’d love a functioning government and the occasional visit from the sun.
@craigmod um, where? I’m getting about 1 mbps.
@mgs @craigmod hyperoptic gets you up to 1000/1000, community fibre up to 3000/3000 (that’s with whom I contract, but those two are being deployed per council, you gotta check where you are), BT isn’t as fast for upload but you’ll still get a 1000/220 if they offer fibre where you are, all London covered shortly, (I dislike Virgin, too unreliable and shitty upload anyway), and on 5G Vodafone, was able to get close to 580 down — not bad.
@papadimitriou @craigmod Very useful. Place where I am now has Sky which is so bad. 60 up / 20 down max. And seriously, often it's sub 5 for both. in 2023. Unacceptable and untenable. Need a solution pronto.
@mgs @craigmod pretty much every offer you’ll see is on openreach, the network that sustains BT, open to all eg Sky, PlusNet, TalkTalk, and whoever else, meaning they’ll all have the same speeds, as they all use the same copper line. Check https://www.openreach.com/fibre-broadband/ultrafast-full-fibre-broadband to see when you’ll get openreach fibre (or if you already do). You could use a tool like USwitch to see if independent providers like hyperoptic or communityfibre are active in your area.
Ultrafast Full Fibre Broadband | Openreach

Meet the next generation of the internet - Ultrafast Full Fibre broadband, built by Openreach. Check now to see if it's available for your home or business. It's ready for anything - are you?

@mgs if you see one of those is not active yet, register your interest (or, you could do what I did at the start, I used my business to ask them to deploy it, but that’s a more expensive line). If virgin is your only option, why not, I mean, they’re not great for customer service, but they have 1000 in download speeds, and their own cable network.
Downside, long contracts.
@mgs finally, check the phone masts in your neighborhood, if you see that there’s work being done (boxes added on top, cable hanging middle of the posts, or at the bottom), it means openreach fibre is coming soon, as they’re upgrading all London, and you can always use cuckoo in the meanwhile (they’re a great company, it’s openreach but they have monthly contracts so you’re not bound to Sky 12/24 months contracts, or whoever, whilst waiting)
@mgs I should add, you can have broadband via 5G, with an antenna at home. But it’s hard to know how solid that is, you should do tests with your phone and people on other networks to try and understand the quality of the network. BT offers it (EE network), Vodafone, Three, etc
Big downside is that it can get clogged in the evening when everyone watches Netflix and plays PS5, the speeds drop, and the weather can also affect it. And if you’re next to a popular London area, forget it.
@papadimitriou update: I have upgraded. Finally.
@mgs oh I’m glad! Is that on virgin? Next, a good mesh network for the home :-)
@papadimitriou yes and yes!
@mgs I’ve been using Orbi for 7 years, currently with the 960 wifi 6e series (only the very latest Mac stuff uses 6e, iPhone 15 let’s see), superb speed, good with those pesky walls in those British houses, and no clogging of the bandwidth due to their extra back haul, downside is that they’re big (hard to hide, Megan might object ^^) and expensive. Heard good thing about eero and velop.
