Sometimes I do not even put Dr or PhD in my e-mails or conversations in both official and unofficial contexts. It is just a title. More important is the ability to build rapport. Titles build walls.

There is such a thing as “healthy boundaries.”

Also, “it’s just a title” is clearly nonsense. If that’s the case, why bother with all the coursework, research, and publication and hand out PhDs like blue check marks?
@jsdodge @Mencjusz @ninokadic @academicchatter There are also gender issues around using Dr. I once had a student refer to a male colleague of mine and me in the same sentence as “Dr. Smith and Ms. Klein.” When I pointed this out (nicely and constructively), they hasn’t even realized they had done it. This happens all the time in many contexts. So I do insist on being called Dr. Klein when in my role as a professor.
@JoanneKlein @jsdodge @ninokadic @academicchatter it is a problem that I have witnessed towards my colleague as well. Titles make life so much more difficult. I ask students to call me by my first name. It is so much different: Joanne and Michael.
@Mencjusz @JoanneKlein @jsdodge @ninokadic @academicchatter When I worked for municipalities, I only used my ir. title (M.Sc.) when citizens would use their title in a complaint. When I worked at a city with a uni, I noticed that especially uni staff were more title aware than the average Joe the plummer in interaction with me or the board.

I get students (always male) calling me 'Miss' like I'm some 19th century schoolmarm. I got annoyed and corrected one of them once. I mean, I'm a full professor and in my late 50s. 🤦🏾‍♀️
@sikka @jsdodge @Mencjusz @ninokadic @academicchatter I get that, too. Even in the 19th century, a woman could claim an honorific Mrs. as a mature adult. I feel like I should hum the tune of Petticoat Junction when I get called Miss.

Lol, I don't think they understand how jarringly inappropriate it is.
