About a year ago, I started working on a profile of Neeva, a search startup with some big and interesting ideas. Before I finished it, Neeva shut down. Figuring out why became the story: https://www.theverge.com/23802382/search-engine-google-neeva-android
How to build a better search engine than Google

Two ex-Googlers set out to create the search engine of the future. Neeva was faster, simpler, and ad-free. But building the tech, it turned out, was the easy part.

@davidpierce Have you tried Kagi? I think it’s gaining momentum…
@CarlosSierraOz @davidpierce I don't think there's any way a paid search engine can gain any momentum, not while ad-blockers are a thing
@SharpLorren @davidpierce I understand that but how about privacy and improved efficiency? I know is not enough to beat Google but I think there is a market for that don’t you think?
@CarlosSierraOz @davidpierce I use Firefox with DuckDuckGo and AdBlock, no problem with privacy on that regard. Ad-free cannot be your only value proposition for a paid service when there are free options. I would argue it's best to include a premium search engine with some other services like cloud platforms or an ISP. I will try the free queries from Kagi nonetheless
@SharpLorren @CarlosSierraOz @davidpierce I think search result quality is actually pretty subjective, but ddg was pretty useless to me. Kagi is not only better, it's noticably better than Google.
@gazan @SharpLorren @davidpierce I used DDG for years but their results in Spanish (my native language) were not good, I had to use !g pretty much all the time. Kagi has been great in comparison, fast and efficient. I know privacy is not enough but it’s AI tools are great too.
@davidpierce really interesting article. Its a shame I can’t test Neeva for myself. When I heard about it at first, I thought “a paid search engine doesn’t make any sense when I get it for free”. Then I thought about it and changed my mind but then they announced they were shutting down
@davidpierce good piece covering the breadth of US search companies and the proxies which build off of them, if you're interested in what's happening elsewhere, we're here đź‘‹
