Has anyone signed up for Super Duolingo, then later cancelled? I really want to know how easy/not easy it is to cancel before risking it. I'm trying to learn Welsh. and have been ok but their adverts are now so intrusive. #SuperDuolingo #Duolingo #Language #Mastodon #Fediverse #learning
@lindasgoluppiart I've been threatening to cancel my SuperDuo ever since they switched to the automated voices, so I'll let you know how it goes if I do! The Cymraeg course at least is much better than the Gaeilge.... Someone here recommended Say Something in Welsh, and I've found that to be much better than Duo. I wound up cancelling it, only b/c my work life got too intense to keep up multiple languages, and it was easy to cancel. I'll sign up again eventually though.
@ursaborealis Thank you for the reply. I've heard about Say something in Welsh, as I'm not saying enough! However felt I'd get some basics under my belt first. I look forward to hearing how it goes if you do cancel.
@lindasgoluppiart
I'm curious whether you lose all progress on the course if you cancel the paid subscription. That's what has kept me from canceling so far.
@ursaborealis I think I read that you don't lose the progress but you might want to double check.
@ursaborealis Diolch!😊
@lindasgoluppiart Ok, just googled it and if you cancel, you keep your progress, but you don't get a refund--instead you keep the subscription until it runs out. https://support.duolingo.com/hc/en-us/articles/115004068123-How-do-I-cancel-my-Super-Duolingo-subscription-
@ursaborealis If I understand correctly, sub annually, so that's a bit steep if you felt it isn't working for you.
@lindasgoluppiart I'm in the US, so we might have different options, but there is a monthly option that you could try for a month and then switch to annual if you like it. You save quite a bit with the annual subscription, but you'd want to know it's working for you. I did the free version for a while and got too annoyed with the ads, so I subscribed, but I primarily use it for Gaeilge and that course has deteriorated. The Cymraeg is much better though.
@ursaborealis Sorry to hear about the Gaeilge. Thank you for the information. Must be getting late for you. 😊

@lindasgoluppiart Meh, it's alright. There are so many other resources available these days! Duo was just awfully handy for getting in a little practice each day.

I'm in Alaska so not so late here.

@ursaborealis My main concern was with the actual cancellation, some companies make it so awkward, you want to jump off a cliff. If it is an easy cancel I feel that's not so bad but the only way to really know is if someone has done it.
@lindasgoluppiart Easy to cancel--just a button in the settings under "manage subscription."
@ursaborealis I spend a reasonable amount of time in Eryri (nephew's house) and since starting to learn Welsh I've discovered that quite a lot of people living in the area who let me understand they spoke fluent Welsh, do not! 😅
@lindasgoluppiart My experience with Duo is that it's handy for revision and for building vocabulary, but not so great for actual language learning. I learn how to pick the correct answers and "win" more than I learn language. But it's handy as a tool in the quiver.
@ursaborealis I got a bit caught up in that trap but have learned quite a lot, I also use youtube at times which has a lot of helpful videos and info.

@lindasgoluppiart related to your Q but indirectly, I split the Family access super duo membership (covers up to 6 people) among family+friends and it was much more reasonable per person that way.

You still pay the year up front, but each is just chipping in a bit ($20 per when we signed up iirc)

I'm not sure whether the cancel is a hassle

I can confirm that the progress gets saved. I had a free super duo gifted to me that later lapsed and my progress stayed.

Dw i'n dysgu Cymraeg hefyd!

@Waiting4Thunder Bore da and thank you for your reply. Your strategy sounds a good one. Unfortunately atm I'm the only one learning another language (some already have more than one language so it's more a matter of time.)
