I spent half my life being told critical thinking skills were essential and then the country turned on a dime and said "no, not like that" as soon as we started talking about the material realities of bigotry and oppression.

Now it's, "We can't let white kids think about racism because they'll get the sads."

@gwynnion Critical thinking is important as long as you're thinking uncritically about right-wing talking points.
@gwynnion Not the whole country. Less than half of it. I'm sorry we have to fight again for rights we thought were secured, but we will fight. And win.

@gwynnion The people leading that charge - we can't let white kids think about racism - are _exactly_ the same people who _actively and fiercely_ fought critical thinking in schools.

They've always been here, they just didn't have full control of the Republican party yet.

But it is _exactly_ the same people. (And in some cases their kids.)

@gwynnion The goal isn’t education, it’s willful ignorance.

@gwynnion

It's also like, "We can't let white kids think about the system because they'll criticize their parents and later be less enthusiastic conformist cogs within the wealth generation machine."

@gwynnion @lisamelton yet at the same time they say “boys should toughen up and never show their feelings”.

The blatant hypocrisy is what I find so galling.

@gwynnion we’re all like court jesters! Paid by the lords to make fun of them, making them relatable. So we gorge at the party instead of revolting.

But still, I’m glad that artists are getting paid at all!

@gwynnion They should tread lightly, if kids aren’t thinking about racism they might start to think about the systemic oppression of the rich against the worker class instead. Oops!
