We have a front garden that gets limited rainwater and has dappled sunlight from a maple tree.

The closer to the house, the less rainwater it receives.

We previously had a "traditional" garden in there, but very few of the plants survived, with some notable and noxious exceptions.

I ripped it out earlier this summer, and now I'm looking to fill it back out.

My plan is currently to fill the back portion with #BushHoneysuckle. #gardening #HamOnt

I don't know if there's enough light there that they'll flower well or have really great foliage colour, but I think it'll bush out and form a decent sort of hedge, and then in front of that I can do some river rocks and a proper perennial shade garden.

I'd love to fill in the front with shade-tolerant natives such as:

* Spotted geranium
* Woodland phlox
* White wood aster
* Canada ginger
* Running strawberry

and who knows what else. Thankfully we have a native plant nursery not too far from here.

@dandb Boehmeria cylindrica is a native plant that is vigorous, edible and shade-loving. It doesn’t have glorious flowers but is verdant. Aralia racemosa will also grow in shade and can be rather pretty. It’s also edible but it doesn’t produce a whole lot so it’s mostly just for show.
@jblue ah cool, that's going on the list. Though it might be a bit too tall for my purposes.
