It is by pronouncing the Ukrainian word for a loaf of bread, “palianytsia,” that a friend is now distinguished from a foe at the military checkpoints around the country. Perfectly pronounced by Russophone Ukrainians, the combination of vowels and consonants makes Russians choke on the word connoting hospitality in the country they invaded.」
Personally, and not being one from the ever-pathetic 'russkiy mir', the only russian I'd learn — until a few more accidentally learnt grunts well after my teens — was 'ruki vehr'... Thanks grandpa, for sharing all that you or anyone really should ever need to know about russia!
I'll probably never be totally comfortable seeing kyrillics, but before (or while) visiting Ukraine I'm totally going pick up some #Ukrainian.

But I have to correct you. That phrase you've learned is better transliterated as 'ruki vverh'.

I mean, how do you get them to say 'loaf' without first engaging in some unwelcome small talk..? 🤔
