#GreatAlbums1990s – #Beck – #Odelay (1996). Upgrading the ramshackle approach of his early work, Beck enlisted the turntablism of the Dust Brothers for this minor blockbuster, replete with hits like “Where It’s At” and “New Pollution.” Sonic textures vary from 70s funk (“Novacane”) to Eastern raga (“Derelict”) to semi-conventional blues and folk-rock (“Hotwax,” “Jack-Ass”). Blanched-out hip-hop presides of course, but the Dusties’ help Beck take it to cool new places.
