I'll be giving a workshop on #ReverseEngineering as applied to malware at #BSidesMTL on 2023-09-16. 👨‍🏫

I'm glad to be such a great local event once again, and hopefully I can teach some people some useful stuff!

@barberousse_bin That “text marker” circles and arrows and stuff is bad, bad attention baiting. Don’t do that.
@calisti
I didn't make the poster, just sharing the one designed by the organizers.
Are there any specific reasons why this kind of stuff is bad, besides being tacky?
@barberousse_bin As I said, it is attention baiting.
It does not hold what it promises. It makes you look closely to try and determine the meaning of the arrow, just to determine that there is no meaning and you were played a fool. Baited and hooked.
This is what made YouTube thumbnails so painful. It’s the visual version of buzzfeed clickbait titles.

@barberousse_bin It pretends to be the product of someone reading something, circling parts they found important and marking up relations between parts of content.
None of that is true.

You could call this a “dark pattern” of visual design. The same 💩 that is used to make you click the “yes please track my web surfing” option on cookie banners and that makes you unable to figure out how you can delete your account somewhere.

@calisti
Good points, the design felt a little weird to me but I couldn't quite place why. I think you just put the words to my vague impression

I tried to fix the worst of it with my very limited Gimp abilities.
