We cancelled all of our #streaming & are uncovering a long-ignored trove of DVDs & VCR tapes (we have a working VCR!).

Last night was #Juno w/Elliot Page. Tonight, one of my all-time favorites: #RubyInParadise w/Ashley Judd.

Respect to workers whose labor opened up a wider, wilder world for me, evoked sympathy & understanding for new people & cultures, made me laugh, gave new ideas & taught history & compassion.

[deleted "in support of strike" b/c unions have not called for streaming boycott]

@chargrille
I like this, and join. RESIST
@chargrille Libraries have tons of DVDs too. Usually I don't even have time to watch what I took out.
@theLastTheorist Yep, same! We put stuff on hold & just pick it up once a week. Libraries are the greatest invention of civilization.

@chargrille we haven't been asked by either union to do that.

But to be fair, I made that exact same assumption on Friday as well!

@Tyld

I'm taking the substantial amount of money I'm saving & donating it to the workers' fund until the strike is over.

I saw 2 actors I greatly respect say yesterday that they personally were canceling their streaming services.

I suspect that if the union were to call for people to.cancel their streaming, they would instantly get sued for contractual interference which, meritorious or more likely not, would be detrimental to the strike.

@chargrille glad to hear you're able to donate to their war chest. I've encouraged my social circles to do that as well.
@chargrille @Tyld That would be my inclination (though I only sub to YouTube Premium and have no streaming svcs to cancel in that way) but I thought I would share this since I saw it and hadn't considered this viewpoint.

@chargrille @Tyld it takes organization to do a meaningful boycott, and union leadership who are in the rooms negotiating will have the best idea of what is most effective.
@chargrille Not crossing the picket line doesn't mean canceling streaming services. None of the unions that are striking have called on people to do that.
They might do that at some point, but they haven't yet.
I encourage you to follow the lead of the unions and support them the way they're asking to be supported.

@jik

Yes, I'm supporting them in the way they have asked (donating to the strike fund and using their social media guide).

Our family also decided to cancel our streaming. The unions haven't made any statements asking people NOT to cancel. Regardless, it's too late in my case! I cancelled on day one, and I would rather send all the money we are saving, directly to the strike fund (which I am doing). Thanks for caring about the strike.

The WGA is _not_ explicitly asking you to cancel streaming services. However unfair the contract, guess where their livelihood comes from? With any luck a renegotiation improves the payout and residuals from streaming, and so diminishing that right now is in fact taking money out of the writers' pockets while trying to punish the bosses. Want to show your support? Follow the WGA's own solidarity guidelines! ✊ https://www.wgacontract2023.org/take-action/stand-with-writers EDIT: rearranged not/explicitly to clarify that while the WGA page does not make mention of a boycott, this omission is intentional, as boycotts are important options held in reserve during negotiations.
