I'm so excited to announce that StreetPass is now available for Safari in the Mac App Store!! https://apps.apple.com/us/app/streetpass-for-mastodon/id6446224821 #StreetPass
‎StreetPass for Mastodon

‎StreetPass is a browser extension that helps you find your people on Mastodon. Here's how it works: 1. Mastodon users verify themselves by adding a custom link to their personal site. 2. StreetPass lets you know when you've found one of these links, and adds them to your StreetPass list. 3. Browse t…

@tvler You're welcome! It was awesome to work with you on it! It looks really awesome!

Good luck with the extension!

@tvler Can't wait to try it out! Thanks!
@tvler oh that is great. This extension is really wonderful, I have found many interesting people now thru exploring weird blogs and then having them suddenly listed in StreetPass
@liaizon So amazing to hear! I've had the same experience too :)
@tvler I install a lot of weird extensions and think they are a underutilized part of the web ecosystem but what you have built is just instantly more useful then most. And it was something I didn't realize I wanted until I experienced it first hand.
@liaizon I think there's a lot of value in tools that that help you ambiently collect things. you could even see the model of streetpass working pretty well for RSS links or some other completely separate collection category
@tvler this is really awesome!
@vmstan glad you like it 😄
@tvler Nintendo would like a word with you
@farsayl loool I may or may not have already done a patent search. About half of them are expired, and all of them specifically refer to the technology being used for videogame devices so I think I’m good?? Just don’t tell pls lol
@tvler alphy: i tried installing and activating it and i'm getting this:
@pleonasticTautology huh interesting…. Could you drop your MacOS version + version of safari?
@tvler alphy: MacOS: 13.4.1 (c) (22F770820d)
Safari: 16.5.2 (18615.2.9.11.10)
@pleonasticTautology @tvler Getting the same error. I’m using macOS 12 Monterey with Safari 16.5.
@gwil so weird! Did you set the extension permission to “always allow on every website?” I might need to check if that’s properly set or something
@tvler I did! I also see this little guy in Safari’s toolbar:
@gwil By any chance to you see an error pop up in your browser console when you quit and open safari and navigate to a website? I wish I could help debug more…

@tvler Yeah actually. When I navigate to a page and toggle the extension on and off, I see this error in the console:

[Error] SyntaxError: Can't create duplicate variable: 'currentUrlWithNoHash'

@gwil unfortunately I feel like that bug could be a red herring (tho should still be fixed as well). I’m able to repro and yet I still see it working for me once I navigate to a new page that triggers a StreetPass item. I’ll look more on mon!
@pleonasticTautology can you list out the steps you did to see this please? I can’t repro on my end but maybe I’m just missing something
@tvler installed from app store, ran app, opened safari settings, clicked checkbox, error
@pleonasticTautology I’ll look more on Monday! Thanks for the info… so odd it seems like this is a bug that’s only effecting a small amount of ppl
@tvler does this let me wirelessly connect with strangers in physical proximity like the StreetPass on Nintendo 3DS did?
@snickerbockers unfortunately….. no🥀
@tvler Any plans to bring this to iOS? (Is this even possible?)
@kaiserkiwi is actually pretty possible. The underlying extension code can be shared, but obviously no real estate for an extension icon, which is integral for Streetpass. I think the solution would be moving the notifs to the actual app icon somehow and build the ui into the actual app - but obviously a big increase in complexity! I think it’s an interesting idea and have def thought about it :)

@tvler It seems at least to be possible to put a hint on the Extension Icon if there's something new.

This hint comes from an extension that kills cookie consent overlays. If I tap on the extension in the menu I see a web view. So maybe not as convenient as on desktop but it could work.

I absolutely understand that the complexity would increase enormously if you build it with an app interface. It would be awesome but I can understand that it might be too much for such an extension. 😊

I'm already glad it's available for Safari on desktop now.

Do you have any donation platform/link? 😊

Hey @tvler love StreetPass! I've already added the ref="me" to my sites header! Looking forward to seeing how the extention evolves!
@just_an_atom nice! Some cool things coming :)
@tvler nice! Any plans on iOS/iPadOS as well?

Do you plan to build an iOS version? Like a safari extension?

@tvler Isn't streetpass that functionality of the nintendo 3ds where you got other people's miis into your ds?
