AustinWe recently found out that we will finally be receiving the last payout of our #HurricaneIda insurance claim (nearly a full two years later). We were “lucky”, our insurance company trickled out payouts to us as we fought them over each repair, so the mortgage company didn’t try to hold up our funds until the very end (when we we finally crossed some threshold). Repairs have long been complete, but now we can pay ourselves back with the insurance money.
Our journey was longer than many, in part because we waited to begin repairs on our home in order to offer my mother-in-law a place to stay while her home was unlivable. But it makes me think of all the individuals who didn’t have the many thousands of dollars needed to bootstrap repairs and get started building back their life.
There are still quite a few homes and businesses in the surrounding communities that stand pretty much as they were on Aug 27, 2021 - completely gutted/destroyed.
