This stirred a long conversation on Twitter yesterday. What do you think about it #Mastodon ?

@cecirahim i'm not sure what we mean for "thesis commitee" here: is it the #thesis tribunal for the defense or some other thing?
If the former, I'd say not all the participants have the same importance (at least in Spain) , so for instance I'd like to know and meet the president of the tribunal but it may be that I don't know the third member. Also, in many instances PhD students don't get to decide who is in the tribunal (I know I won't) so honestly... kind of a false dichotomy 😂😂
@LucillaPiccari Wow! That's shocking. I think your thesis tribunal equivalent is the dissertation committee in the US. For us, we get to pick out committee members. We work with them every step of the way (some more closely than others) and at the end they are part of the panel that grades your defense. As such, if I'm picking someone who is that important to my career, I was t to meet with you at least once in the process before the defense! That would be my (and many others) preference.
@cecirahim well, it sounds like your dissertation committee has a bigger role in your #PhD than my thesis tribunal does. In my case, they are just experts that read my thesis (once it's written and deposited), prepare their objections and grill me over it for about 4 hours 😅 They have no role in the development of the studies or in how they are carried out. The thesis itself, in my case, is mostly constituted of peer-reviewed articles and that's where most of the scrutiny happens.
