1/2 The next crisis in #Finland?

Might be a #ConstituionalLaw -crisis.

Four opposition parties want to intermit the summer break of the #parliament to have a #ConfidenceVote about the racist minister Riikka #Purra. And the fifth one is open for it, too.

Prime minister Petteri #Orpo said yesterday, that "there's no need for that".

However, our constituional law says that the #government and it's ministers must have the confidence of the parliament.

2/2 The experts of #ConstituionalLaw say, that the speaker of the house Jussi #Hallaaho should then ask the #parliament to gather; anything else woud be un-democratic.

Halla-aho hasn't so far been exactly acting how a speaker of the house should act (no surprise there).

Then there's the question about what #Orpo said: "there's no need"

Was it already a slip to the #authoritarism that we've seen happening in other countries where the #FarRight has gain power, or was it just bad communication?

@HannaEsmeralda_ this seems like quite a shocking change from normal Finnish politics, which are usually careful to avoid divisions.
@Loukas It truly is. But when we look this at the larger scale - what has happened in countries, where the centre-right has started to work with the far right, it's kind of, uh, normal.
@HannaEsmeralda_ yes absolutely. I suppose as history fades away and globalisation joins us all the countries fall under the same political spell

@HannaEsmeralda_ I'm starting to sound like a broken record, but...

...we need more pressure towards RKP/SFP whose hard-built reputation as liberal-minded, minority-friendly party is melting away faster than a snowman in midsummer.

They are the only party in government taking serious damage to their (former) reputation.

@ReimanSaara @HannaEsmeralda_ I'm shocked they joined the government and double-shocked they remain. I suppose I'm still less cynical than I thought.

@Loukas @ReimanSaara Most of us are shocked that they even started the negotiatons, and there has been several profile-members that has publicly left the party.

The confidence vote of Purra would be a pressure for RKP/SFP/SPP; now there is already talks about the racist writings of Purra in 2019, so RKP could not hide behind that matter, that the writings of her are 15 years old.

@HannaEsmeralda_ @ReimanSaara The same thing happened with Swedish Liberalerna. The social-liberals resigned and now the party is controlled by the rightwing. It will now only survive another election by getting tactical votes from the conservatives.
@Loukas @ReimanSaara Yup. RKP already has a problem, that it's voters are one of the oldest among the Finnish parties, and now it is especially the young / youngish members that are dissapointed. So RKP's acts are truly self-harming.
@HannaEsmeralda_ @ReimanSaara they are selling tomorrow to rent today. It's a pattern we see across the democratic world. It's all going to lead to a horrible mess.
@HannaEsmeralda_ @Loukas
They are not stupid. They gambled -quite possibly in order to protect their voter base from being targeted by Basic Finns. That gamble has already been lost, but will they admit it while there is still something they can save?
@ReimanSaara @HannaEsmeralda_ but the Basics want to end Swedish education. How could RKP voters consider voting for them?

@HannaEsmeralda_ @Loukas No wonder, either. They were a well-functioning part of previous government that was polar opposite of this one. They could teach handwashing techniques to Pontius Pilate.

Civil society should press them hard even while most media attention goes to other parties.

@ReimanSaara @Loukas I've done my share. I wrote an opinion piece with a friend that was publiched in every Finnish-Swedish newspaper, I've written several emails to Anders Adlercreutz with who we sort of bonded in Twitter (yes, he has answered). Dunno what more I could do.

@HannaEsmeralda_ @Loukas You certainly have, and if you feel if there's not more you could do, that is probably correct.

Like you told me yesterday: we all need to do (and can't do more than) what we can, when we can, as we are able, and then just hope that in the end, it will help to make a difference.

@ReimanSaara @Loukas In Finland we have a proverb about cat and it's own tail; I must do a bit of that.

The opinion piece was so good, that RKP felt so much pressure, that the party secretary wrote an equivalent, and tried to keep up with the newspapers that published our text. In the end he gave up, haha!

@HannaEsmeralda_ @Loukas Sounds like it might start dawning to him that he is in the losing side and out of arguments.

Looks like their next strategy is "be quiet and hope that everyone forgets you while they are going after bigger prey" instead of "abandon ship", though.
