Oof. #climatechange
Text edited to add citation from Paulo Ceppi, a climate scientist at London’s Grantham Institute via WaPo: "Instrument-based global temperature records go back to the mid-19th century, but for temperatures before that, scientists are dependent on proxy data captured through evidence left in tree rings and ice cores. “These data tell us that it hasn’t been this warm since at least 125,000 years ago, which was the previous interglacial,” Ceppi said, referring to a period of unusual warmth between two ice ages." https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-environment/2023/07/05/hottest-day-ever-recorded/
This July 4 was hot. Earth’s hottest day on record, in fact.

Scientists say the average temperature on Earth was 62.9 degrees Fahrenheit on July 4, the highest since at least 1979 and a sign of the worsening climate crisis.

@johndark And the world has been slapping the snooze button for about a hundred years

@johndark

THE Wakeup call of ALL Wakeup calls..!

@oscarfalcon @johndark time to ban private jets and air conditioning..oh wait…
@HBsosweet @oscarfalcon @johndark Some of us will actually die without a/c. Depends on your personal health and your geographical latitude. But we can ban private jets and find more environmentally friendly ways to stay cool, absolutely!
@johndark fuck i thought saudi aramco said this wouldnt happen.

@johndark I absolutely believe that climate change is happening and that we need to be doing much more about it.

But I cannot find a source that would confirm the statement in the second panel. The best I found is that the last 7 days was the hottest 7-day period on record (which goes back 44 years).

The 7 hottest days ever all happening in the last 7 days and the average temperature of the last 7 days being the highest of any recorded 7-day period are pretty different statements.

@rem @johndark We set a record for the hottest day, and then kept breaking that record, based on the graph I saw. Sadly didn't keep a link to it, though. Maybe someone else can supply it.
@johndark
We are all going to die
Might as as well fight over unimportant things
I say Im an empath
But deep down
I miss getting into fights at waffle house
While God is still asleep
@johndark Meanwhile in Lagos Nigeria it is forecast to rain heavily all of the coming week with top temperatures of 30°c! The weather is certainly changing. With the deadly European heat coming in from the south meets the unsettled cooler Atlantic air coming in from the west could we in the uk be at risk of hurricanes or tornadoes?
@AAA365a @johndark It cooled down to a mere 88°F (31°C) last night here in Texas. That's not so abnormal for here, were it a month from now, but the extreme humidity added to it makes it very difficult to tolerate.
@johndark don't think of it as the hottest week in the last 100000 years.
Think of it as the coolest week of the next 10000...

@johndark

The hottest week ever recorded on Earth... A week in which the top news story in the UK - all week - was... a celebrity's possible sexual misdemeanors.
Don't Look Up !

@johndark This will be the coldest summer for the rest of your life.

And your children's.

And theirs, and theirs, and theirs, and theirs, and theirs.

If we, tomorrow, increased our actions to mitigate Anthropogenic Global Climate Change by a factor of 10, and adopted every new mitigation strategy, their children MIGHT have a chance at seeing some minor improvement......

If.

I'm not holding my breath.
