Google DeepMind, the division responsible for AI efforts at Google, was created through an internal merger of Google Brain and DeepMind. DeepMind, known for applying AI to games and protein-folding simulations, was acquired by Google in 2014. The merger was aimed at making Google more competitive in the AI market. Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, confirmed that Google had no competitive moat in AI, but disagreed with the idea that open-source models on commodity hardware were catching up to the tools used by tech giants.
