In 68-71, half of the NY free #jazz world was in Paris, where they had chances to record on French labels like BYG and America that were never afforded at home. Clifford Thornton's Ketchaoua (1969) was one of the best of that short packed period. #BYG has a bad rep, and many of these sessions were just late energy music jams. Ketchaoua benefits from Thornton's writing - he was one of the most impressive composers of the early #freejazz period. #jazznoisehere #vinyl #jazzvinyl @jazz
The historiographers of early free jazz are sometimes said to favour passionate and intense screamers over more conceptual composers, like Thornton or Bill Dixon. It's worth checking everything Thornton did out, particularly Gardens of Harlem.
