My girlfriend has been selected to present a #poster at an international #conference in #astronomy, but does not have the #funding to go. She's inbetween masters and PhD, so neither institute can provide funding. Does anyone know if there are #travelgrants for a #woman #IndependentResearcher in #astronomy from #india ?

@dhruvasambrani
Some conferences (the non-for-profit ones) sometimes have a bit of funding to help, so it might be worth asking.
@academicchatter
@j_bertolotti @academicchatter she did, but they don't have anymore. The deadline for funding applications has passed
@dhruvasambrani
The it is tricky, as any answer will depend on the fine details of affiliation and place where she has to travel.
@academicchatter

@j_bertolotti ah I forgot to add.
She's currently not affiliated with any institution, since she's inbetween her masters and her PhD.

She will be presenting in France.

@dhruvasambrani @academicchatter Has she approached the conference organisers to see if they have any discretionary funds that could help?
@antinomy @academicchatter she has, but their calls for funding date has passed, and they don't have anymore 😔
Since this is a poster, can she not ask a colleague to present it on her behalf or does the conference not have an online component? Sadly, as much as many of us do not like to fly, academic conference organisers seem to be oblivious of the carbon costs of long distance flights and make lives of academics in the Global South difficult.
@arinbasu1 this would be the last resort plan, but she would miss out on an opportunity to meet people in her field, which she feels is important for an early career researcher like her
@arinbasu1 @academicchatter @dhruvasambrani Having someone else present your work kind of defeats the purpose… especially for early researchers.
I hope she will find some source of funding for it!
Yes, do not disagree with you on this, although as practically few scientific work these days are conducted by solo scientists, it is likely that she has collaborators who can present the work and at least the poster gets displayed in the conference that matters. Conference organisers need to create more spaces for young and ECRs to attend conferences. Most mid-career academics etc who are not presenting anything significant at a conference can stay home and pay for junior colleagues to attend them (wishful thinking!)
@arinbasu1 @academicchatter @dhruvasambrani we should abolish poster presentations! They don’t assist new scholars with their metrics. Few people spend more than a cursory glance and it costs a lot for this. Why not not have all posters presented after keynote for 5 minutes each?

Not useful for our OP, alas, but regarding research posters in general: Have you come across the Better Research Poster?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1RwJbhkCA58
(Skip to about 11.40 or so if you're in a rush and you'll get just about everything.)

I personally find it really good. Have a few dozen of these in a poster session and it would massively improve things, particularly if you use the QR-code-to-preprint idea.
