Best thing I can recommend for starters is pin this intro post and edit to add the #introduction hashtag, include some hashtags you're interested in, search and follow those hashtags, and go follow a bunch of people! There's no algorithm here, so it won't push content to you. You see a chronological post timeline of the people and hashtags you've chosen to follow.
Oh, and check #mastotips #feditips. Ask any questions you want, people are helpful

Some mechanics are definitely different. SMAUthors' best bet is most likely to figure out groups so end users can mute SMAUs they don't want to have overrunning their timeline - fortunately it looks REALLY easy.
