One of the many things that bothers me about white supremacists is their revisionist history of the Civil War. "Ol' Bobby Lee" was a gentleman and wasn't "that bad" on slavery. Well, 160 years ago TODAY the retreating Confederate Army kidnapped over 1000 Black people in PA and MD and took them to Virginia for enslavement. Few know about this, but it was a war crime on top of the tragedy of Gettysburg.

@WillRobinson I actually knew this.
@Thumptastic that Bobby Lee was a fascist?
@WillRobinson Well, there is that, but that POC were kidnapped from the North and re-enslaved.
@WillRobinson if only the US had treated the Confederates the same way Germany treated the Nazis.
@yosasocial @WillRobinson
Their assassination of Lincoln was their most successful action of the Civil War imo.

@WillRobinson

I see the importance of Lee as being that he was, by the end of the war, pretty much the one major prominent figure whom the majority of white Southerners didn't want to lynch. He was the one who, instead of fighting a bloody rearguard action, violated his orders to negotiate a surrender, which left his men able to go home and try to get their lives in order.

This made him convenient for the oligarchs (who not only were pardoned, but had much of their wealth restored) to use as a figurehead for their campaign to rehabilitate their own reputations and restore their political control.

@tsukkitsune @WillRobinson What is often forgotten today is that by the end of the Civil War, Jefferson Davis was probably the most hated man in the United States, universally reviled for his misrule that ended in national disaster for the South. The Civil War is the only war I know of where the losers wrote the history -- most Northern generals weren't much for writing, they were mostly good at fighting, and their memoirs were too little too late.
@WillRobinson this makes me even more thankful the Confederacy was defeated
@WillRobinson similar to what they did to the guy in 12 years a Slave and that took place before the Civil War. Such cruelty.
@WillRobinson There were heroes on both sides of the Civil War: soldiers of the Union, and defectors from the Confederacy.
@maxleibman @WillRobinson got to remember this for Italian fashists! πŸ˜œπŸ™ƒ

@WillRobinson β€œYo ol’ Aunt Beckie is goin’ up into de hills. No rebel is gonna catch me and carry me back to be a slave again.”

I, too, love Aunt Beckie. A strong-willed woman after my own ❀️

@WillRobinson And Maryland was a slave state already. In early 2000s MD history lessons (progressive private school) we learned that MD was a slave state that stayed with the Union during the Civil War.
