My kids are either never leaving us, or not living in Vancouver. Those are clearly the only two options now.

As housing costs soar, some financial analysts advise to scrap the 30% rule | CBC News

Thirty per cent is the often-touted maximum percentage of your income that you should spend on a home. But in an age where the average one-bedroom apartment in Vancouver rents for $2,787 a month, is that number still realistic?

@anthonyfloyd I took a walk on queen Elizabeth’s park and then on Cambie, on Canada Day. Almost noon, beautiful day, holiday. How many people on those balconies? Zero. Because of traffic noise on Cambie street. Still, came home wondering how much they sell for. Laughed when I look at the price. The only place not ridiculously unaffordable right now is Burnaby mountain on SFU leasehold. Good thing the city gets worse every day so the motivation to stay and somehow pay for it goes away as well.

And (almost) the only “solution” that gets any coverage by media, or discussion by the politicians, is “encourage developers to build more affordable housing”…! As if handing over managing housing to the real estate industry, and turning it into an uncontrolled profit centre, isn’t how this disaster came about in the first place.

As a group we just don’t seem capable of learning. When you’re in a hole, stop digging…

@iamwahl @anthonyfloyd oh, they're capable of learning. As a matter of fact they learned their lesson quite well.

It's just not the lesson you wanted them to learn.
