Daily Mastodon trending topic report:

1. You’re using it wrong in many ways that personally offend me

2. This place was better without any people

3. Open-source software

4. You’re being polite but not in the way I prefer

5. The Fediverse (“fedora universe”)

6. Should we de-federate Toyota if they start a server?

7. Top 20 Fediverse alternatives to Wikipedia

8. Historical evidence that Hitler invented quote tweets

9. Cats

10. It’s weird how people create accounts but don’t stick around

@Chris Please elaborate on the topic of fedora universe. I am intrigued.
@Chris I mean there are also cats
@Chris this pretty funny and accurate 😂
@Chris So, like Usenet used to be every September
@Chris How does a #Fediverse alternative to #Wikipedia work?
@Don_kun That’s the kind of question that’ll get you defederated.
@Chris where is it? where can I see drama? I'm so bored

@tslil @Chris Try posting "I think Facebook should federate with Mastodon so I can talk to my parents". Guaranteed instant drama.

You can double it as a drinking game, every time you see the phrase "surveillance capitalism!" take a drink.

@blakeyrat @Chris thank you I will look it up
@Chris Please appropriately CW this sick burn as gore.

@Chris "2. This place was better without any people". That's me. My timeline was wonderful BTI when it consisted of academics and gender fluid gamers. Now it's got .... people in it.

(BTI = Before Twitter Imploded)

@Chris Arguably misses out:

11. Should we defederate and block any instance trafficking with the enemy^WFacebook?

12. Hah hah, Elon Musk is not the sharpest hammer in the toolbox

@cstross @Chris 13. It's so much nicer here. People are lovely.

14. Anyone who didn't leave Twitter last year is fascist scum and should be fed through a woodchipper.

15. More cats.

@cstross @Chris

Those are # 3 and # 1 in my experience, and none of the rest at all.

Added to which # 2 would be "What do we think about BlueSky and Threads? Anyone got an invite? Threads is a bad choice of name if you are British and old enough."

Yes, none of the rest. Including cats. More plants and birds than cats at the moment. I know that this is heretical, but it's true nonetheless.

@cstross @Chris

And as I write that, a discussion of Threads and that drama series is at the # 3 position on Mastodon.Scot's trending posts list.

No cats. But there's a dog at trending # 9.

@Chris probably not enough cats
@Chris I subscribed to that mastodon bot that tells you if you haven’t put alt text description on an image, which is a neat feature. It’s fecking annoying when it tells you that someone you boosted hasn’t used alt text and that you should inform them. I’m not going to go around policing other peoples content!

@fabricatus @Chris

I have decided the last couple of days out of consideration to others to only boost stuff that does have the alt text thingie on images, like anything that must be liked will be liked, but stuff with images and no alt text won't be boosted. Feels like it's the best medium. Still that's a lot of stuff i won't be boosting that deserves it.

@Chris @jherazob absolutely fine to make that decision. I just don’t like that the bot is designed to make me police other peoples posts. I still allow it to follow me in case I post an image without Alt Text as I want to make sure I do the right thing though!

@Chris

What the hell did you expect when they made this place from *PEOPLE*? This place might be a helluva lot better than pretty much all the alternatives but it's still full of *people*, and people *always* gonna people 😂

@Chris you forgot the rule about recommending following @lisamelton for a firehose in your feed.

(Which I actually enjoyed, but had to use Ivory to put the toots in a list 'cause my feed was flooded. That person is a manic—in a good way!)

@fnordius @Chris LOL! Thank you and, yes, I am a maniac. 😂😊🥰💖

Also, that's an excellent strategy for dealing with my firehose of toots. 👍

@Chris Well, chances are it would be good to de-federate ANY major corp.

As a former long-term employee of said major corp, I can definitively say that the only reason they do anything is for profit and their presence is invariably bad. I think that goes for most corps though.

@maxlords @Chris This is kind of why I can't stick around in Mastodon, I get the feeling people with a lot of leverage are philosophically opposed to brands on social media (which is fine) and wish to impose that on others (which is the problem). I voluntarily sign up to get updates from corps I'm interested in on Twitter/Insta. If you can't buy a promoted message that forces it's way into someone's timeline, what's the problem?
@Chris
I'd put cats at number one though 😾
@Chris Have you considered adding alt text to that list for people who can't read lists, you monster?
@Chris I'm here for the cats
there are "trending topics" on mastodon? how are they measured?
@Chris @cstross So many similarities to Usenet in the 90s. :D
@Chris well the cats part is true
on hubzilla there is no such thing
@Chris @BlippyTheWonderSlug #10, I wonder why. It’s truly a mystery.

@fabioromeu @Chris
It's an easy scenario:
New user fresh from Twitter, 0 followed/followers, creates account, opens app: Hello, world!
*silence*
*waits a few minutes*
*silence*
Hello?
*silence*
*waits a few minutes more*
*silence*
Screw this.
*closes app and forgets about it*

Unfortunately all too common.

@Chris

Well cats are quite nice 🙂🤷‍♂️

@Chris More Fedoraverse, please.
@neglectedbooks @Chris
🥥 It's properly spelled "moar," Mr. or Ms. Books.
And why don't you have a #cat with a hat on your poster? 🥥
@Chris Mildly offended that cats were ranked so low (in a polite way, of course).
@Chris #4 is a personal favorite of mine, for sure.

@Chris One you missed is:

11. If your city adds a bike lane it'll become an instant utopia with children laughing and birds singing, also if you drive a car you're Stalin

@blakeyrat @Chris I've seen that post before, but "Stalin" was written in the author's name rather than inside the post
@blakeyrat @Chris
🥥 You spelled Satan wrong, Blakeyrat. Just saying. 🥥
@Chris 8. Historical evidence that Hitler invented quote tweets
9. Evidence that the absence of quote tweets is a deliberate plot to suppress [insert lefty cause here] activism.
@Chris this is SPOT ON
@Chris
The cats is how I knew I’d come to the right place!
@Chris Thank you for explaining what the Fediverse is. I had heard reference to it, but never put it together. 🙏
@Chris
@jwz
Y'all forgot search drama.
@Chris @offby1 I honestly want to know what weird quirk of my usage here is making it so my encounters with the posting HOA are so infrequent and mild. 2nd order contact (such as this post) is constant but aggressive CW shaming and overheated meta-fediverse discourse *itself* is fairly rare

@Chris @alexwild

So, early Twitter without the VCs
