HEY #PAYPAL USERS! WATCH OUT!

On the web interface PayPal just introduced a new dark pattern #enshittification to the transfer-balance-to-bank-account process to trick the user into electing the premium and quite expensive "immediate transfer" option, instead of choosing the free 1-3 day option.

When you initiate a transfer, this is now what shows up:

It LOOKS like the two choices are "transfer immediately" ("Transfer in Minutes") and "cancel transfer" ("Not now").

Nope, hitting "Not now" takes you to the old dialog box that gives you a choice of immediate transfer, for a premium fee, or the free 1-3 day transfer.

@siderea the same sort of nonsense TurboTax does to get you to take out the equivalent of a high-interest short term loan on your federal return.
@siderea Holy fuck, that should be illegal. That should carry a *hefty* fine. 😒😠😡
@kagan @siderea Yeah that seems like a lawsuit waiting to happen
@kagan @siderea it’s too bad the CFPB got disarmed before it even got started… I feel like this is exactly what the originally envisioned office would have swiftly made an example out of.
@cabbey @kagan @siderea finance bros goal to have all Americans indentured by 2030 and make Fintech the only place with growth.
@siderea Got that one last night and it took too long to figure out how to not do that 😡
@qlp PayPal customer service says they'll forgive the fee if you agreed to it by mistake. 🙃
@siderea Shouldn't have to deal with that hassle and wait however long it takes to get the fee credited back. 😑

@qlp Indeed. I don't for a moment think that them reversing the charge makes up for them invidiously charging it in the first place.

I am supposed to be working on something else right now, so I'm not going to really get into it here and now, but: there's a REASON that since time immemorial - like literally this stuff is in the Bible - small infractions of deceit in the market place by vendors are punished severely, typically with what we call today punitive damages.

Though there's also something to be said for that whole thing with dragging the offender behind a chariot with the offending good tied around their neck.

@siderea "Transfer In Minutes"
"transfer may take up to 30 minutes" lol
@AutumnAgain "🎵🎶Five hundred, twenty five thousand, six hundred minutes🎵🎶"
@siderea This has been annoying me for several days now. It's a bit like those gas stations that put the premium gas on the left to fool you into spending $1 a gallon more than you need to. (Yes, I got caught out by this last week.)
@siderea @gavinsmallbeerpress #venmo too — thanks for the heads-up or I might not have noticed!
@siderea wait, immediate transfers cost money on paypal? maybe that's just a US thing because there has never been a "speed my transfer up" option in the UK, it's just always been mostly instant (except for when they hold your funds for no fuckin reason...)
@doe I wouldn't be at all surprised if it were a US-only thing, bc I gather electronic transfers are a very different, more rational thing in Europe.
@doe @siderea We mostly use our bank's app to do transfers, which is free and transfers the money in about 3 seconds, maybe 10 seconds if it is having a really slow day.
@katrinatransfem @doe Bank-to-bank transfers (in the US at least) are a very different beast than PayPal-to-bank transfers, if that's what you're referring to.
@siderea PayPal is a dark pattern.
@siderea PayPal is so bad these days that they're only afloat because of their exclusive deals with the store fronts. I've avoided so many purchases because of that though so my wallet it thankful 🙏
@wraptile Yeah, it was great for my purposes once upon a time, but those days seem gone.
