To insist non Japanese #haiku adhere to three lines in 5/7/5 is absurd because not even all Japanese haiku does. Haiku was commonly written in a single column, but there are two, three, and four column haiku by Basho, who arguably created the haiku as we understand it. Three-five-three or twelve syllables total seems to fit better with English, but perhaps it’s best to focus on content than length. As long as a haiku can be spoken in a single breath, it’s fine.
