The Online News Act aims to create new government oversight for digital giants who dominate the online advertising market

Google said it will remove Canadian news from its platforms & end existing deals w. local publishers because of the Online News Act, which forces digital giants to pay media outlets for content they share or repurpose.

Google plans to remove news links from its search engine, Google News and Google Discover for only Canadian publishers and readers.

Meta announced it will also be removing news in Canada from its Facebook/ Instagram platforms before the law is in force.

Meta is also ending existing deals with local publishers, including the contract for a fellowship program that supports the hiring of a limited number of emerging journalists at newswire service The Canadian Press.

The Liberal government views Meta & Google's dominance on the internet & their decision to remove news as a threat to Canadian democracy at a time when the news industry continues to face cuts due to declining ad revenue.

Since 2008 ~500 newsrooms have closed across Canada

COMMENT: I personally would never trust news sourced f. Google, Meta ... There are many reputable news aggregators (NPR; Reuters; AP; ...) & independent journalists / sites

@persagen my feelings exactly it is no loss not to have access to Post Media bullshit and now have swallowed the alleged left wing Toronto Star

I question the impartiality of this pollster (Angus Reid) & the results of this poll (biased, misleading questions).
I argue most Canadians neither understand Bill C-18 nor - properly explained - want censorship imposed by tech giants in response to that bill, which is a broader concern over their power & influence, NOT Bill C-18.

Well, Meta Blocked The Tyee: That’s a Big Deal
What this means for journalism, democracy, & you

@thetyee

Yesterday Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram & Threads, flexed its muscle and we at The Tyee felt the sting.
We’re blocked f. posting news stories on 2 of the giant’s platforms - Instagram; Threads (Meta’s rival to Twitter) - and it seems the same may soon be true on Facebook.

Well, Meta Went and Blocked The Tyee. That’s a Big Deal | The Tyee

We posted (as usual) on Instagram and Threads and got told to pound sand. What this means for journalism, democracy, and you.

@persagen I'm still trying to decide what I'll use when #google stops working for me but it won't be #Bing.. #Microsoft is ruthless - crushing #Netscape in the 1990's, their #EmbraceExtendExtinguish play against #Java, ongoing attempts to sabotage #OpenOffice standards to prop up their #Office365 product - they won't be getting my search traffic.

@SheamusPatt @duckduckgo Hi ! 👋

Check out Searx (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Searx) online instances, which work great.

Searx is a privacy-protecting (fully anonymous) open-source metasearch engine. It became my default open web search engine.

Alternative: Dogpile (metasearch aggregator).

@SheamusPatt @persagen @duckduckgo I've been using #duckduckgo for a couple of years now, including their search engine and their Android web browser. Very happy with them, don't miss Google or Chrome.
@persagen if government funding could be used to enforce truth in reporting it might be a good thing. However that would give politicians a lever to determine what is truth.

@Oldfartrant That's my concern.

"Polls" from the Vancouver-based Angus Reid Institute are read/cited by policy/decision makers, politicians & legislators - and the news media (uncritically).

Likewise, the Vancouver-based Fraser Institute - a pseudo-intellectual, pseudo-academic neoliberal "think tank" - is disproportionately influential:

* https://persagen.com/docs/fraser_institute-neoliberal_exemplars.html

Needless to say, I am a critic.
