"Why are people saying the modern Web is cluttered and unuseable? It's really not that bad..."

*disables adblocker*

"oh."

@carotte

For me, the ad blocker is like the American Express card: "Never leave home [or enter the web] without it."

@carotte Yep. Opera is really good at blocking ads. Mind you, I still have to put up with:
- this site would like to send you notifications (WHY? It's not an app!)
- bad cookie option pop-ups
- auto-playing videos
- awful hover menus where stuff happens without a click.

Sigh.

@macronencer You should try out Firefox! It doesn't block ads by default but with some settings changed and a couple of extentions (uBlock Origin for ads and Consent-O-Matic for cookies) it handles most of these problems

@carotte @macronencer

I can wholeheartedly agree
I personally use LibreWolf, which ships with uBlock Origin, so I practically never see any ads anymore.

@carotte @macronencer I did not know that Consent-O one, cheers :)
@carotte I used to use Firefox. I changed to Opera so long ago that I can no longer remember why :) Maybe I'll take another look. Thanks!
@macronencer definitely worth checking out. Opera has been bought by a Chinese consortium some years ago and frankly, I wouldn't trust it with something as personal as my browsing history.
@carotte
@noodlejetski I didn't know that. Sigh. It's so hard to keep up. I work in IT and I have family members who aren't as clued up as I am... but I'm also 58 and although I'm trying to stay current, it's a PITA. Wouldn't it be lovely if everyone just played nice?
@macronencer yeah, trying to keep up with it sometimes feels like a full time job.

@reallyjim @macronencer @carotte 10% off! You have only 8 minutes left....
@melroy @reallyjim @carotte You two are cracking me up! 😂 It's actually worrying though. The web held so much potential, and now it's like trying to walk down a path covered with dog poo.
@macronencer @reallyjim @carotte hello! I'm Jessie. Your personal assistant. How can I help you? I did not understand your problem.
@carotte I turn off all my AdBlock etc once a year to see how the other half lives.
@carotte It’s the web equivalent of visiting a relative with cable TV: 40% ad breaks.

@carotte "It looks like you're using an AdBlocker!"

*blocks that too*

@carotte Admiral Adblock Blocker has entered the chat.
@carotte I installed yesterday an adblocker on my dad's chromebook and he is impressed how much nicer it feels to use

@carotte That's me until my elderly neighbor ask the local IT guy *me* to have a look at her new laptop behaving oddly.

Installed uBlock Origin and YouTube Enhancer immediately to stop all that nonsense. And advised her not to buy HP inkjet printers ever again.
Enshitifcation is real, y'all.

@carotte I have ublock on all the time, and the web is still annoying to me. Especially those delayed signup popups that disrupt your read.
@carotte Yeah, especially when you're trying to get information from fandom
@PrysmaTheMagical Oh yeah, Fandom is the WORST
@carotte OH! You’re trying to find out information about your favorite fandoms? Here’s a couple of video ads that makes it almost impossible to read.
@carotte This is why I really hate browsing on phones with apps or even browsers. Not savvy enough to disable ads as much as I can on Windows.
@smashedratonpress @carotte yeah I haven't figured out how to block ads on my phone either
@carotte an adblocker and something like noscript are essential
@carotte The modern web is probably pissing Tim Berners-Lee off if I had to make a very bad gues.
@carotte Never roll without an adblocker. Any site that asks to disable it is not worth visiting.
@carotte I’m from the time when Google only allowed three ads MAXIMUM on a single page, whether they were Google’s, another network, or your own in-house ads. I miss those days.

@carotte

À chaque fois que je vois un "please disable your adblocker" pour accéder au contenu, je vais sur un autre site!

@carotte Slate just served me a pop-up window that said “We need to talk about your adblocker.” Buddy, you do *not* want to get me started.
@carotte This basically. And this was 21 years ago https://youtu.be/xze8C10hxMw?t=28

@carotte
I don't want to even dare turn any of mine off.

...I don't need the trauma of what occur back during the age of netscape.

@carotte Flash of Original Content *cough
@carotte going around the net without Adblock is like dating and never using a condom when/ if you sleep with all of the people you date. You’re going to catch something LAMO.
@carotte
adblocker+privacybadger+cookie-consent-denier makes the web bearable. I'm always surprised when I borrow a coworkers computer, and realize what things are "supposed" to look like.

@carotte This. I'm away from home and it's PiHole, and... OMG. Literally 95% of the web is ads, why do people put up with this?

OTOH, I now see why our users keep emailing fizzing about how simple our service is to use.

@carotte remember that scene in Idiocracy? This is where we are with everything, because “free speech” 🙄
@carotte I wish my adblocker actually did something. Maybe I'm doing it wrong maybe I'm just getting harassed by a bunch of government employees. Lol
@carotte I am starting to think that 99% of all the content on the internet is click bait. Makes ChatGPT look attractive because so far it isn’t pushing ads.
@carotte for real, I had once visited one of my usual websites on a computer without an adblocker and I would not have recognized it had I not typed the address myself. The internet is a wild place without adblockers!
@carotte Given the sheer quantity of malverts and standards-violating stuff, I can't think of life without uBlock and good privacy extensions.

@carotte Have you ever tried visiting a Fandom wiki without Adblock? It's so painful.
@carotte the network security team at work decided to block and remotely uninstall all ad blockers. They think it will improve security somehow 🙄
@carotte
I run a pi-hole for DNS ad blocking plus Ublock origin. The internet is hell without ad blocking.

Pi-hole – Network-wide Ad Blocking

@carotte@mastodon..
I sync extensions in all my FF browser instances:
Ublock
Privacy badger
NoScript
Autoplay No More

More bearable web!

NoScript realy shows how many companies are in on your browsing and sniffing on your tail.... and thats just the scripts not the tracking pixels etc.

@carotte For what it's worth, I recommend the Brave browser for Android (and maybe iOS). It blocks intrusive junk by default, and even keeps count. Here's what it says for my phone:
@carotte i kinda want to run away to gemini but i'm not sure if there's like, stuff there
@carotte using a computer for the first time and forgetting to install an adblocker is always a jarring experience because you realise that the Internet assaults you with ads now, in every possible nook and cranny.
@carotte been using firefox with ublock for a while now, I recently switched to using ad nauseam instead
@carotte It's also just really boring and corporate now. Everything has an algorithm or design to addict (which has very similar and repetitive traits), and every website feels the same.
@carotte Forget banner ads and such, we've all learned to ignore the absolutely fake news articles at the bottom of EVERY article. Like, we've just learned that after the article finishes, it's just a "no man's land" of garbage.
@carotte LOL, yeah I have not seen an ad on the internet for a decade, probably more. PiHole, an ad blocking host file and Ad Block Plus might be overkill, but nothing and I mean NOTHING vaguely resembling an ad gets through.
