Welcome, Stitcher users!

I started Overcast ten years ago in large part because I was afraid of Stitcher taking over the market with its proprietary walled garden (which was even more walled at the time, and was gaining significant traction).

I wanted to ensure that the open world of podcasting survived and thrived, even when faced with strong proprietary threats.

The names and players have changed since then, and the battle continues, but open podcasting remains dominant and healthy today.

@overcastfm The podcasters who were required to promote Stitcher were so obviously awkward about it. What an embarrassment of a service. Good riddance.
@cary @overcastfm Now if we can just get rid of Spotify…
@overcastfm For a split second I thought to myself "Did @marcoarment just bought Stitcher?" lol
@joaomendes @overcastfm @marcoarment same. Was quite confused for a moment.
@overcastfm @clew Hello! I love your app! Have been a happy paying user for a few years. Thank you very much for making Overcast! :)
@overcastfm I never thought they were that bad, tbh. Just a little different from Memberful or Patreon. I think I even had Stitcher member shows in Overcast for a bit.
@overcastfm Good riddance. I help publish several podcasts. Stitcher's publisher-facing UI/tools were the worst of any of the big distros, by far.
@overcastfm @scully #Overcast has always been the best. Happy paying user via iOS
@overcastfm love your app. So thankful that it has survived and thrived over the years!
@overcastfm Overcast may be my favorite and most used app. That means and says something. Kudos!
@overcastfm won't lie, had a panic attack and thought you acquired stitcher for a second
@overcastfm do not attempt to compete with overcast

@overcastfm Wow. Just ... Wow.

And here I am still using PocketCasts all these years later....

@overcastfm Wow. What will happen to the content of those who used Stitcher? We didn't choose them but I'm still curious.
@fulanigirl @overcastfm Purely from observation, the (partly-)Stitcher podcasts I follow seem to be retaining/regaining ownership of the formerly paywalled catalog.
@Fpccraig @overcastfm I guess they then have to find a way to archive it somewhere accessible. I worry about this kind of thing because our podcast provider was purchased by Spotify...and they make me very nervous.
@fulanigirl @overcastfm Yeah, quite. And I have conflicted feelings for the folks left in the lurch by companies whose intent was/is to exploit and/or destroy an open ecosystem.
@overcastfm Amazing timing, since I just switched to Overcast for the great syncing with my Apple Watch.
@overcastfm I love the app & use it all the time. Thank you!
@overcastfm Overcast still doesn’t have as much episodes as Stitcher does. Why is that? My primary podcast app is now Spotify. & I’d love to make it anything other than Spotify.

@overcastfm Been a happy, paid Overcast user for many years. The only thing missing that would make it perfect is a "random" button!

Instead I manually maintain a separate list of podcasts in TinyDecisions, use that to randomly pick one, then use RNG to randomly pick the episode.

@overcastfm a bit odd of you to speak negatively about proprietary walled gardens and then only play in the apple ecosystem...
@overcastfm Will you expand to Android? I miss you.

@overcastfm to be fair, Stitcher had at least some podcasts - 99pi for example - that aren’t behind paywalls. I’ve yet to hear anything from @romanmars about their future, and I’m a bit scared atm…

Spotify, otoh… :/

@overcastfm @romanmars
However, the brand’s being killed in favor of SiriusXM amplifying just one brand, and… <hack>{ptui} on THEM.
@overcastfm I don’t know when I started using overcast, but it’s been my podcast app for a long time, and happily supporting it. I hope you get a lot more activity as new people looks for a quality app on iOS
@overcastfm apparently it really dominated on android. I’ve seen so many android users seeking new podcast players today.

@overcastfm I added a podcast where I was doing tech stuff to Stitcher, just because I was trying to get it on every platform. Never understood what Stitcher was, though. I guess now I don't need to find out...
@overcastfm I'm going to have to find other places to get some podcasts from. Just as well I don't use Stitcher for most of my podcast listening 🎧
@overcastfm the only problem left are "podcasts" exclusively being uploaded to Spotify.
Because people started to upload podcasts only on their platform even when they don't receive money for doing it. Just why, WHYYYY
@overcastfm Spotify is next. When Spotify bought Gimlet, I actively refused to listen to any podcasts ever on Spotify, as I could see where that was leading. And dammit, I wanted to listen to Heavyweight in Overcast! With Spotify’s podcasting division struggling now, I was able to get my wife to also stop using Spotify and switch back to Overcast. These are small moves, but this is how we win over time, as evidenced by Stitcher’s unraveling.
@overcastfm big money came for podcasts, now they're leaving?
