An analysis of Russia’s effectiveness at boosting propaganda on social media platforms is part of a trove of documents recently leaked on the chat app Discord.

Indicted Chinese exile controls Gettr social media site, ex-employees say

Guo Wengui has previously been described as an investor in the site, which was founded by Trump adviser Jason Miller. But former employees say he really controlled the site.

These academics studied falsehoods spread by Trump. Now the GOP wants answers.

Rep. Jim Jordan is demanding emails and meetings with leading disinformation researchers, part of a flurry of records requests, subpoenas and lawsuits that academics say have become tools of harassment.

@JosephMenn this story made me so mad I emailed Kate starbird to support her and...well the good news is that she responded to say she gets way more support messages than hate mail. Still Jim Jordan remains terrible.
Free, free, set them free.
@JosephMenn if you want to keep something precious, got to lock it up and throw away the key…
@JosephMenn Dream of the Blue Turtles was an excellent album.

@JosephMenn

Hard pass.

@SpaceLifeForm to free content from the post? Why?

@JosephMenn

I do not want to give out the email address.

@SpaceLifeForm Doesn't have to your primary one.
@SpaceLifeForm give them an alias or a tempmail.

@Rush

Why go thru the effort when I will learn of the story later anyway?

@SpaceLifeForm not the point I'm making. That's something you can decide for yourself.

@Rush

You are young.

Security is hard.

@Rush @SpaceLifeForm Meanwhile, I don't want to interface with the site anymore than necessary because it's owned by Bezos, so I can't trust it fully.
@JosephMenn And then you will be spammed by them forevermore.

@JosephMenn

What BS is Bezos selling this time? Or trying to ram down our throats?

Suffice it to say that I regard Amazon as a serious contender for the most harmful corporate cancer of them all. But it's a tough race these days.

@JosephMenn

You got me to look, but I couldn't figure out or spot what Bezos is pushing. Or maybe he just wanted to update his email address lists the better to spam us next week?

However it is possible that the reason I couldn't spot "it" might be because WP is using AI to tailor the "user experience" to such a degree that what I saw has no relation to what y'all are seeing.

@JosephMenn

Looked again and what caught my eye was the new notification system--but now you'll tell me it's been like that for years. (I stopped looking at the WP quite a while ago.)

@JosephMenn
Show me a 10ft paywall, I'll show you a 12ft ladder. Services like these seem to work well 365 days a week. No subscription or email address required. Just saying.

@JosephMenn I canceled my WaPo subscription for a reason and it wasn't the cost.
