Far-right group Moms for Liberty tries to explain use of Hitler quote

‘The quote from a horrific leader should put parents on alert,’ the extremist group tried to explain

The Independent
@WillRobinson within the cult everyone agrees that their enemies are godless Nazis trying to brainwash everyone’s children so they didn’t realize that the projection is obvious for anyone outside the cult.
@theothersimo @WillRobinson I think it was @Sundae_Gurl who called them by their proper name: Klanned Karenhood.
@WillRobinson Wait, "Adolph Hitler? We meant Tommy Hitler! This was clearly an honest mistake!"

@WillRobinson A while back, I stumbled upon a cracked com listicle of inspirational quotes from history's greatest monsters. It included some innocuous sounding quote from Hitler.

When I saw this headline, I assumed they had been taken in by something like that, some clever intern sneaking an unattributed quote into a poster or something. Imagine my surprise when I saw the screenshot.

@octorine @WillRobinson

But points for correct attribution right? :-9

@WillRobinson This is the first time seeing the quote in context. I first thought it was one of those situations where the quote was just misattributed, and so the group was embarrassed or trying to justify that they didn't mean it *that* way. But, nope, it's all there, the full knowledge that they were quoting AH. A "liberty" group was of course swimming in, what's the right word? Ignorance, cognitive dissonance, irony, hatefulness - I can't quite find it

@ericatty @WillRobinson

It's not ignorance or cognitive dissonance in this case. They're taking their strategy from Hitler and see him as guide.

@WillRobinson Yeah right. I'm torally convinced
@WillRobinson "The left/liberals/queer lobby etc. are literally Nazis" is a well-established trope on the far right (among those parts of it that don't literally wear swastikas, obviously). It's part of the same memetic package as "They were national SOCIALISTS" and "Weimar Germany was a sexually deviant haven of liberal culture, and that led directly to Nazism."
@outeast @WillRobinson by thier logic, China and North Korea are Free countries
@WillRobinson "Moms for Liberty will not be intimidated by hate groups!" You ARE a Hate Group
@WillRobinson the weirdest thing about all of this is that Hitler said plenty of things that, without knowing it came from Hitler, would be very quotable. This...was not one of them. This one straight up sounds like condoning child abuse or child labor or something, before you even consider the fact that it was said by Hitler.
@WillRobinson is liberty a popular word (for lack of a better term) in the UK, or are they being really obvious about US right inspiration?
@WillRobinson Is this something that happened after someone very ignorant googled “quote education”?

@WillRobinson

They are saying they want to "control your kids" so they can "be be" stupid like them ....

@WillRobinson No one is stopping these parents from being involved in their children's education, they just want to prohibit all kids from learning things they don't want them to.

I knew what was going on in my kids schools, I PAID ATTENTION.

@BlueintheSouth @WillRobinson they already homeschool their children they want everyone else’s children equally ignorant.

@WillRobinson “If the government has control over our children today, they control our country’s future. We The People must be vigilant and protect children from an overreaching government.”

Ironically, an overreaching government is exactly what's happening.

@WillRobinson Religious thugs have been saying that since before Hitlers time.
@WillRobinson I found their explanation totally convincing, just as I believe stories about the tooth fairy and Santa Claus. Surely their use of the word 'Brigade' in their heading is a bit of a give-away.

@WillRobinson And along comes Ingrid Jacques (no link, bc I don't want to drive traffic to her, but you can find it on USA Today) saying "I don’t think for one second the group was advocating for Hitler or fascism."

Not only does she whitewash the context and placement of the quote, she also completely ignores the whole palling around with the Proud Boys aspect of the organization, their repeated history of harassing and threatening their critics.

Sigh.

@WillRobinson they claim to want to save their children from govt influence then invite the guys who want to run the govt to their event. I feel sorry for their kids.
@WillRobinson I'm rather fond of the box below, roughly "our hate group will not be intimidated by people who fight hate groups!" That's perspective, right there.
