Given just how much "enshittification" of internet companies we've seen of late, I put together a list of 7 basic rules for internet CEOs who DON'T want to enshittify their companies: https://www.techdirt.com/2023/06/21/seven-rules-for-internet-ceos-to-avoid-enshittification/
Seven Rules For Internet CEOs To Avoid Enshittification

It seems that we’ve had a rash of formerly loved internet services going down the enshittification curve. As coined (brilliantly) by Cory Doctorow, enshittification is the process by which a compan…

One company I admire after all this time is #Craigslist

Craigslist shows the value of a leader who won't be bought.

@craignewmark could have sucked value out in buckets, but users came first. Maybe there is room for a rule like "it's not always about the money."

@donaldham @mmasnick I mean Wikipedia is a good example of this. A service run truly for the good of people and I think it's why it's lasted for over twenty years at this point.

I don't like Telegram much, but that is a personal preference. However it does seem that Pavel Durov has followed your rules pretty closely.
@mmasnick 🥥 I thought that the original #CoryDoctorow article about #Enshittification was one of the best think-pieces I had read in the past 30 years.
This response to it by #MikeMasnick is a close second -- but only because it was written after Doctorow's.
Of course no tech bro is going to give up his venality to follow Masnick's 7 rules, and I wish that Doctorow had spelled it "enshitification," but those 2 things will have to wait until I rule the planet. 🥥
@mmasnick I appreciate the commitment to doing this on a website from 2003
@rebecca_meadows Techdirt? We were founded in 1997.
@mmasnick These are really solid
Cathrynne Valente's article (stop talking to eachother and start buying things) is complementary to Doctrow's enshittification and yours as well

I bet you're wondering how we got here...

Welcome to Garbagetown
@mmasnick This is interesting considering that Red Hat appears to be taking steps down this path. IBM is gonna IBM.

Amazon, Bezos, and Prime is an interesting choice for a positive example. For CEOs to follow

@scottmatter jesus no

@corduroy right?

Maybe (maybe….) Amazon hasn’t had the same kind of enshittification trajectory, but it’s existence seems to have enshitified so many things, from local retail to labour markets to privacy …

@scottmatter try and find the not-sponsored results in any amazon search. The enshittifiication is there, for sure.
@corduroy I’m out of touch. Haven’t tried to use the thing for years. Not surprised though
@scottmatter i was only using it for the example of resisting Wall St. in the early years. Clearly Amazon has done some terrible shit along the way.
@mmasnick Solid article, although I think "never" in point 6 is a bit strict. it's ok to charge for something that was free, but only if absolutely necessary- not to squeeze more. Sometimes free is needed to get a foot in the door; users might grumble, but like you said they want you to survive, so they'll be ok with it if it's necessary. But it should be avoided if possible, and for the love of god follow point7 if you do need to do it (and ideally, communicate free is temporary at the start)
@mmasnick i also find the Amazon example a little funny, because it's had it's fair share of enshittification (prime 2day shipping promises degrading, quality control, sponsored search results, etc). Although your point/example is totally valid, they still did a lot with looking long term. And as you mentioned, no company is perfect
@mmasnick didn't the Amazon example turn out to be the enshittification long game though?
@BurgersMcSlopshot yes. was only discussing resisting wall st. demands in the early years
@mmasnick how do we get this directly in the faces of gig work companies’ executives?
@mmasnick when enshittification is added to the OED, it will be the capstone of @doctorow@[email protected] ‘s impressive career. Can’t get any higher than that.
