So #StrangeNewWorlds is swinging hard for its #MeasureOfAMan episode. I’m not sure they connected. Wish they had gotten a few SF-savvy lawyers, particularly ones versed in the UCMJ and civil rights law, to advise them.
I wish someone at #StarTrek put as much effort into imagining the legal system the pseudo-military arm of a utopian future culture would have as they did in creating the Klingon language
I mean, #StarTrekTOS made it clear we hadn’t achieved prison abolition. It would be nice if that were part of this debate.
There’s also zero discussion of prosecutorial discretion, even when they confront #RobertApril on his discretion in observing the #PrimeDirective

I would think that #UnaChinRiley now has a case for #LegalMalpractice against #NeeraKetoul after the admission that she was advocating a cause rather than the interests of her client.

Of course, it would be nice if if were clear whether that’s an option. What’s the code for counsel under the system Starfleet works under?

This episode makes the same mistakes as most courtroom dramas: treating the trial like an investigation for dramatic purposes. It’s very trope-y.

I wish they had shown the investigation. How Starfleet cops handle that, and the protections offered to targets, would be very interesting to explore.

Oh this ending monologue about The Law is falling flat because we were never told how The Legal System works.
Never did an ovation fall flatter for me than the one on that transporter pad. That lawyer should be disbarred for misconduct.
I’m watching again while attempting to suppress my critical side, partly unsuccessfully, as you’ll see. Una criticizes her defender and the prosecutor with a “how can he advocate for me when he works for you.” Argh…
The US Military has the most robust public defenders office in the entire US justice system: they are truly independent , and do not report up the chain to base legal, and they get promoted into leadership at the same rate as prosecutors. Because of that independence, it’s actually a prestige job, because, as a lieutenant or captain you don’t get the shit extra work like planning the holiday party.

I find it hard to believe that Starfleet is regressive when it comes to that kind of thing.

Grrr. Anyway, going to try to turn off the Statler and Waldorf in my head.

OK! Better second time through. Neera Ketoul’s cross of Una was much better when I paid attention to the acting. Two alienated friends reconciling though their eyes as they dance a formal dance. I’m in.
