Now playing: Monsieur's Hulot's Holiday

I couldn't think of a better way to ring in the first day of summer than with the perfect vacation movie!

This movie is so near and dear to my heart, y'all. Third-favorite movie behind the original Night of the Living Dead and Jaws!

It's a movie that I would encourage everyone to give a shot, especially with it being on HBO Max and the Criterion Channel.

I'll be humming the main theme for *days.* And that's a really good thing, that. No complaints here!

@optiMSTie Found it on Kanopy, the film app tied to our local library. Thanks for the recommendation.

@mwestley

Oh, wonderful! I truly hope you enjoy it!

It's not a rip-roaring comedy, but a pleasant comedy of nostalgia, warmth, and feeling. It's like a warm hug in movie form.

I actually blind-bought it years ago because I loved the DVD art pictured below (side note: that's generally a terrible way to buy movies), but... I fell in love with the movie.

And then I had to track down the rest of Tati's films, and I came to love those as well.

Anywho, enjoy, and happy viewing!

@optiMSTie I did enjoy it. I have to think Rowan Atkinson watched this film, essentially it’s a French Mr Bean even including a comedic car.

@mwestley

Oh, most excellent, so glad you enjoyed that, then! :D

And aye, there's a *lot* of Monsieur Hulot's DNA that can be found in Mr. Bean's bones.

@mwestley @optiMSTie indeed, Atkinson named Hulot/Tati as a huge inspiration, several times. He did make Mr Bean more grumpy, a contrast to Hulot.
@IngridHbn @optiMSTie Mr Bean also has a bit of a mean streak.

@mwestley @IngridHbn

Yeah, that always got to me. I *like* the Mr. Bean shorts, but he could get vindictive, and... oof.

Hulot never really gets in that vein.

@optiMSTie @mwestley well observed :)

@IngridHbn

Thank ya kindly, aye!

And thank YOU for all your Tati enthusiasm!

@optiMSTie most welcome - we can never see too much of #jacquestati

@optiMSTie Oh yes!
Monsieur's Hulot's Holiday is a fine film.
For those who have not seen it, do not let the year made or country of origin deter you from watching. As with other Jacques Tati films, the visual storytelling is easily understood by everyone everywhere, and holds up over time.
Everyone: watch it!

@aa4hs

EXACTLY THAT, *yes!* :D

Like... there are subtitles, but it's not a language-intensive movie.

It plays out like a silent comedy with incidental dialogue, and that it was a French film made in 1953 should not serve as a deterrent for today's movie watchers.

And aye, Tati's other movies are amazing. All five-star movies in my book.

I'm so glad you dig those movies as well, and see them as standing the test of time.

Cheers, and all the best!

@aa4hs @optiMSTie
Totally agree β€” Tati was an artist as unique, that you would instantly recognise his movies after a short period of time watching …

@Oktopus @aa4hs

He also had the gift of making his films so easily and readily rewatchable.

Tati made art, aye, but he also made something that was so indelibly entertaining.

@optiMSTie @aa4hs
Couldn’t put it as precise as you!
@optiMSTie well put. Did you see other #tati films?

@IngridHbn

Oh, indeed!

Love love love them all, even his made-for-TV Parade.

The man was such an artist, and it feels like a crime against the universe that he only got to make six feature-length movies.

How's about yourself? Do you like Tati's works?

@optiMSTie well I’m studying (and enjoying) Tati films for years now. In 2009 I started a β€˜fan’ group on Facebook, the only one there is, it has gone very well for years. People learned a lot and could discuss.

All info and photos are in thereπŸ˜‡ so, always welcome.

I also have other pages and groups all related to #jacquestati 🧑 (Pierre Etaix, Bert Haanstra, …)

@optiMSTie & you’ve got to adore these artworks by Belgian artist #davidmerveille

@IngridHbn

SO VERY MUCH :D

They really look so wonderful as part of Criterion's Complete Jacques Tati box set. Just a treasure, those.

@optiMSTie and David is also a very enjoyable human being πŸ”†
