This has been the year of finally reading gigantic #speculativefiction series/authors I'd ignored for years and then realizing what a terrible decision that was. Now I'm delightfully drowning in CJ Cherryh's /Foreigner/ and Steven Brust's /Vlad Taltos/ amid a Vorkosigan Saga reread, and it's overwhelming but pretty dang fun! #sciencefiction #cjcherryh #stevenbrust #vladtaltos #vorkosigan #vorkosigansaga #loismcmasterbujold #bookstodon @bookstodon
@yerald @bookstodon Ah I loved the Taltos books way back when, but couldn't find the next ones in the seris at a point (or they didn't exist yet). Been on my list to get back into but I'm a bit scared I'll not like it as much anymore :D
@yerald @bookstodon In between newer books, I've started doing this with Raymond Feist's #Riftwar saga. It's been great fun so far!

After many years of SFF it is a treat to follow a new series which only comes out once a year. If I am tempted to binge a very long older series I lose interest after about six so have to ration them myself with an entirely different book in between.
Finally began Joe Abercrombie's The First Law and definitely will read one at a time spread out a little. I was warned about 'Lord Grimdark', but the characters, prose, dialogue and humour is outstanding and makes up for the violence. Also so refreshing to have anti heroes all the way.
Have audible version narrated by Steven Pacey and he is perfect.
@yerald do you have a recommendation for which book to start with? gonna pick up the Vorkosigan saga next! @bookstodon
@yerald @bookstodon Ooo, yes. And next do Cherryh's Morgaine series.
@golgaloth @bookstodon the depths of the #Cherryh well are a bit terrifying. I don’t know why I ignored her works for so long, but I almost didn’t want to find out she was so good, because now I’ll probably always be reading a few #CJCherryh books a year, given average human life expectancy and my backlog.
@yerald @bookstodon I discovered her when I was eighteen, and working on a building site as a chain-boy. That was over thirty years ago. It was almost too late even then.
@yerald @golgaloth @bookstodon I'm in the same boat even though I started 30 years ago 😅
Edit lol I didn't realize I was duplicating the comment above.... The problem is clearly endemic 🥹

@yerald @bookstodon

If you've gotten into #StevenBrust I'd enjoy hearing about it.

I go back to the #Taltos series every few years. Including the prequel series, which has supporting characters of the main series as main characters in their own rights.

I think they hold up and they're short reads, generally. (The prequels are intentionally longer because of the style they're written in.)

@swordplay @yerald @bookstodon
I first read him through The Phoenix Guards, which was hysterical and made me talk funny for several weeks. I actually like the 5 books in that sequence better than the Vlad Taltos books, though I'll admit they're longer and the style may be less to many people's tastes

@BunRab @yerald @bookstodon

Well, he *had* practiced on all the others by then. 😉

And the style is definitely a challenge for some tastes.
